Most games similar to Dark Souls feature blacksmiths who can improve your weapons or create new ones using items you find while exploring. In Nioh 3, you’ll meet the blacksmith relatively early, though you’ll still need to play through the beginning of the game a bit first. While you can access the blacksmith right away, actually upgrading your weapons requires completing a specific task first.
This guide will teach you everything you need to know about blacksmithing in Nioh 3, including forging and upgrading weapons, and finding the materials required to do so.
How to Forge Weapons in Nioh 3
Once you finish the tutorial, you’ll be free to explore the starting areas of the map. Your main goal is to travel west towards Hamamatsu. There, you’ll discover a Crucible dungeon with a tough boss to defeat. Once you’ve beaten the boss and lifted the Crucible’s influence, you can enter the castle to continue the story. Inside, you’ll be transported to the Temporal Rift, which serves as the game’s central hub.
You can find the Fox-masked Blacksmith within the Rift. When you first speak to them, you’ll be able to craft weapons. The process is simple: just gather materials by breaking down armor and equipment you no longer need.
How to Upgrade Weapons in Nioh 3

Once you’ve completed the Temporal Rift section, return to the Blacksmith. She’ll ask you to investigate the shrine at Lake Sanaru, beginning the mythic quest, “A Fierce Flame.” To get to Lake Sanaru, head down to Maisaka and then follow the road north.
Okay, so when I finally got to Lake Sanaru, I needed to head left. I quickly spotted a Scampuss, and honestly, that little guy is a lifesaver! He takes you most of the way to where you need to go, so definitely pet him and just follow him around – it’s way easier that way.

After calming the creature and petting it once more, continue upwards to locate the shrine and enter. Inside, you’ll find Kagutschi’s Magatama, which you must bring back to the Blacksmith.
Once you’ve finished the Myth questline, you’ll unlock two new features: Soul Match and Soul Extraction. Soul Match lets you improve your weapon, and Soul Extraction lets you break down unwanted gear to get the materials needed for those upgrades. This allows you to focus on enhancing the weapon you plan to use long-term.
