Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles is celebrated for its deep and engaging job system, though it has a learning curve. While most jobs are easy to understand and play effectively, healing and item usage can be more challenging to master.
In *Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles*, you can give items to your units through the Equipment menu, but that doesn’t automatically let them use those items during battles. This can be tricky for new players, especially those unfamiliar with the original 1997 game or the 2007 updated version, and might lead to some initial frustration when trying to heal.
How to Use Items in Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles

To use items in *Final Fantasy Tactics*, you either need a character with the Chemist job or you need to equip the Items command in your equipment menu. You’ll also need to unlock each item’s ability by spending Job Points (JP). Unlocking the basic Potion ability costs 30 JP, and more powerful items, like the Phoenix Down (which revives fallen units and costs 90 JP), will require more JP.
How to Heal in Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles
Healing injured units is easiest with items, but as you play, you’ll find more ways to do it. Once you reach Level 2 with the Chemist job, you’ll unlock the White Mage, giving you access to healing magic. Leveling up the Knight job to Level 3 unlocks the Monk, which has strong healing skills like Chakra and Revive. Just like with items, you’ll need to earn Job Points (JP) to unlock each of these abilities before you can use them in battle.
