How to Use Rank Shields in VALORANT

In the most recent update, Patch 10.01, a fresh tool called Rank Shields has become available in VALORANT for dedicated gamers. This tool was initially unveiled during the sneak peek of the VALORANT 2025 season. Dropping from one skill division to another, like falling from Gold to Silver, can be quite a tough experience. However, with Rank Shields, players are granted three opportunities to maintain their initial rank.

Introducing Rank Shields into VALORANT is designed to provide relief for lower-ranked players, reducing their fear of being demoted, and making the ascent through ranked games less grueling.

How Do Rank Shields Work in VALORANT?

In the game VALORANT, players who reach tier one rankings such as Silver 1, Gold 1, and Platinum 1 receive two protective badges called Rank Shields. It’s important to note that this privilege doesn’t apply to the highest rank, Radiant, as it doesn’t have any tiers. The Rank Shields do not safeguard players from demoting in lower ranks like Silver 2 or Silver 3.

Normally, when a player, who is in the top tier (tier one), drops to a zero rank rating, they are demoted to a lower rank if they lose again. However, if players now lose while their Rank Shield is active, the shield will be depleted, and they won’t be demoted immediately; they’ll remain at their current rank with a zero rank rating (RR). This can happen twice if a player has two Rank Shields, but if they lose a third time without any shields left, they will then be demoted.

Players receive Rank Shields upon entering Tier 1 of a rank, either by getting promoted from the lower rank or demoted from the higher tier above. The Shields are replenished only after demotion or promotion. This means that if you exhaust both of your Rank Shields but manage to win a decisive match, your rank rating will go beyond zero, but you won’t regain your shields again.
