Battlefield 6 features four distinct classes, each with unique roles and ways to play. Players can choose the class that suits them best, but first, they’ll need to learn about each class’s available gadgets and equipment. While a Recon class *can* be equipped with weapons like Assault Rifles or Shotguns, it’s most effective to use a Sniper Rifle to fully utilize the class’s special training and core abilities.
The Laser Designator is one of the initial gadgets available in Recon, and it might be unfamiliar to players who haven’t used similar tools before. This guide explains everything you need to know about how to effectively use it in *Battlefield 6*.
How to Use the Laser Designator Gadget in Battlefield 6
Using the Laser Designator Manually

The Laser Designator Gadget functions like binoculars for Recon players. At the start of a match, use the left d-pad on your controller or the “3” key on your keyboard to activate them. You’ll then have the choice to zoom in or set up a tripod. Zooming activates thermal vision, letting you see heat signatures. While you can turn thermal vision off, it’s generally more helpful to leave it on, as it makes it easier to find enemies and vehicles.
You can zoom in up to three levels using either the L3 button on your controller or the F key on your keyboard.

Okay, so once you’re comfortable with the basics, you can start using the Paint function. You do this by holding down R2/RT on your controller or just clicking the left mouse button. Basically, it lets you drop a marker, and everyone else can see it, which is cool! But the *real* power of the Laser Designator comes from painting enemy vehicles – things like tanks, jets, and helicopters. When you ‘paint’ them, it puts a mark on them, making it way easier for teammates with air defense or long-range weapons to lock on and keep targeting those vehicles for a longer time. It really helps take them out quickly!
Placing it down the Gadget as a Tripod
In addition to zooming in, you can set up the tripod. Once it’s positioned, it can operate on its own. You always have the option to control it manually with a button. If you complete the single-player Campaign before trying Multiplayer, the game will guide you through how to use this tool during the first mission, “Always Faithful.”
