How To Use Traps In Sea Of Thieves

As a seasoned pirate with more than my fair share of treasure maps and buried loot under my belt, I can confidently say that traps in Sea of Thieves are not just for the faint-hearted or the uninitiated. They’re an essential part of the pirate’s life, a tool to outwit your enemies and protect your hard-earned bounty.

In Sea of Thieves Season 14, players are offered a variety of weapons and gadgets to cause trouble. One such tricky tool is the trap, which can be used to deceive other players and inflict harm. Although some pirates may already delight in laying traps for unsuspecting comrades like burying Gunpowder Barrels, the new traps introduced in Season 14 provide additional opportunities for creative mischief. Furthermore, understanding the proper usage of traps in Sea of Thieves can also offer defensive advantages, such as shielding your ship from potential invaders or safeguarding your valuable loot.

As a sea-faring gamer in the world of Sea of Thieves, I’ve discovered various methods for employing traps. For instance, you can stock these traps with other items or conceal them beneath the ground. If you’re curious about the locations of traps in this swashbuckling adventure and how to effectively use them, this guide is tailored just for you!

How To Get Traps In Sea Of Thieves

To catch traps in Sea of Thieves, you usually stumble upon them hidden inside regular wooden barrels scattered throughout the vast open-world environment. But don’t be surprised if you find some tucked away in other storage containers such as Rowboat Chests too!

A trap looks like a metal bear trap and falls into the Throwable category. You can check barrels to grab traps and add them to your inventory like any other collectible storage item, such as fruit, cannonballs, or wood. If you’re struggling to find traps, a good place to start is looking inside barrels on any Sea of Thieves outpost, such as Port Merrick.

At any given time, you can only hold up to five traps in your inventory. This means that if your inventory is full of throwable items, you won’t be able to pick up an additional trap. To collect a trap in such situations, you might need to strategically decide which items to discard or exchange for others, in order to make room for the traps.

Setting And Diffusing Traps

After acquiring at least one trap in your collection, navigate through the Item Selection Menu and pick it from the Throwables section. To place a trap, press the right bumper button (for Xbox users) to toss the trap onto the ground, adjusting your character’s arm for directional control during the throw. As soon as the trap lands, it activates and is poised to catch unsuspecting pirates off-guard, causing damage to their health and temporarily immobilizing them. Remember to avoid accidentally stepping on these traps, as you can also trigger them unintentionally.

You have the ability to set traps on various level surfaces, including near ship ladders and within your crow’s nest. However, it may require some practice to accurately position a trap, as they might sometimes end up in unexpected spots, such as being stuck to the helm. Luckily, you can disarm traps by crouching down and pressing the ‘X’ button next to the trap (for Xbox controllers).

Traps may contain additional unwelcome surprises or deceptive mechanisms. Fortunately, other players can detect and circumvent these traps, preventing accidental activation. Alternatively, you can disable a trap by aiming at it and firing.

Loading Traps With Cannonballs, Throwables, And Fireworks

Traps in Sea of Thieves can be stocked with various items that produce distinct effects upon activation, and in certain instances, inflict extra harm. For example, you can fill traps with specific types of ammunition from Sea of Thieves, such as the Jig Ball, which makes a pirate dance in place when activated, leaving them exposed to attack.

Alternative options for filling your traps might be fireworks that burst skyward as an alert, or throwable items such as the Bonecaller which summons a group of skeletons unexpectedly, or Fireballs to deal additional damage upon detonation. Various items can be placed into traps.

  • Blunderbombs
  • Bonecallers
  • Firebombs
  • Fireworks
  • Flares
  • Green Cursed cannonballs, such as the Jig Ball or Limp Ball

As a fellow enthusiast, if you’re looking to set traps brimming with surprises for those unaware pirates, remember to adopt a low profile, much like the stealthy stance one takes when defusing a trap or readying a Chest or Barrel Disguise.

To properly set a trap, first, place it on the ground. Next, squat down by pushing the right joystick. As you move closer to the trap, press the ‘Y’ button (on Xbox controllers) next to it to access the trap loading menu from your inventory. In this menu, transfer items into the trap loader. Upon exiting the menu, you will discover that the item has been placed within the trap.

If you neutralize a trap containing another object, it breaks down in your inventory, meaning you’ll need to reassemble and reload it anew.

Burying Traps

In Sea of Thieves, much like how one would hide treasure, it’s possible to conceal snares. To conceal a snare, toss it down as usual and then dig beneath it using your spade. If you throw the snare onto surfaces such as sand, grass, or earth, you will be able to conceal it. However, keep in mind that it will only appear partially hidden, especially when stacked with other items, so unloaded snares might work best. Concealed snares are triggered when stepped on, but they can also be activated from a distance by shooting them, just like other traps.

Trap Commendations

Catching pirates by setting traps in the game Sea of Thieves is another method for earning Pirates of Mischief Commendations. These commendations involve a total of five tasks related to traps that you need to accomplish. Here they are:

  • Dance Off Danger
  • Pitfall Practitioner
  • Red Alert Raider
  • Secret Snare Setter
  • Trap Ease Artist
