Huge Game Freak Leak Reveals Future Project Data and Pokémon Source Code

As a dedicated gamer who’s been following Game Freak‘s Pokémon series since the good old Game Boy days, I must say, this gigaleak is like finding a Pikachu-shaped hole in my heart! The sheer amount of data that’s been leaked is staggering, and it feels like Christmas came early for retro fans and data miners alike.

In August 2024, Game Freak, a renowned Japanese game development studio established in 1989 and primarily recognized for its Pokémon series, experienced a massive data leak. The leak exposed details of past, ongoing, and future projects, causing quite a stir. It’s only recently that the leaked information has started appearing online.

Game Freak leaks have disclosed approximately 1 Terabyte of information, covering a wide range of topics from the original game codes to project names of future Pokemon titles.

As a dedicated gamer, I recently stumbled upon some disturbing news. Nintendo Life initially reported about a massive data leak at Game Freak, my favorite game developer. Sadly, it seems the allegations are true, as they’ve now confirmed the breach themselves. The leaked information exposed confidential files of 2,606 employees, including me, if I may add personally.

The company asserts that the issue causing the leak has been fixed, however, the data is currently being exchanged online – and unfortunately, it cannot be retrieved.

One intriguing detail that emerged from the leak involves hints about the upcoming Pokémon games. In these files, we find mentions of ‘K’ and ‘N’, as well as a secret project called ‘Synapse’. Some enthusiasts speculate that this could be a massive multiplayer online (MMO) Pokémon game being developed in partnership with an undisclosed studio.

Enthusiasts of retro games are now scrutinizing the leaked blueprints for DS-era Pokémon titles such as Black 2, White 2, HeartGold, and SoulSilver. These specific leaks have led to the emergence of unseen pictures and discarded assets. Some of these images depict early designs for starter Pokémon, as well as characters that were never introduced.
