An AI company in San Francisco today launched character.world, a new technology that lets you create AI characters with realistic personalities, memories, and the ability to connect with people.
This technology uses the Character Context Protocol (CCP), a freely available tool created by EGO AI. It makes it easy to add realistic and engaging AI characters to games, apps, and platforms like Discord and Twitch.
The announcement was made alongside news of $7 million in initial funding, which will help these new, AI-powered products launch and grow.
‘Living, Persistent Characters Who Can Make Games Richer’
In a press release, the CEO of EGO, Vishnu Hari, explained:
For a long time, video game characters that aren’t controlled by players have felt artificial and predictable. EGO AI is changing that by creating characters who behave, respond, and remember things much like actual people playing the game.
We’re striving to create more than just chatbots. We want to build realistic, ongoing characters that make games more immersive, worlds feel more vibrant, and conversations truly connect with players.
A recent video demonstrated the capabilities of EGO AI, showing how users can have natural, back-and-forth conversations with an AI character. This AI, built with CCP technology, provides instant and relevant responses. Importantly, the AI remembers previous interactions and can refer back to them, even when the conversation continues outside of the original game environment.
Here’s the video:
EGO AI is a very new company, but investors are already optimistic about its future. Adam Draper, a partner at Boost VC and an early investor, stated:
I’m really impressed with Ego’s work on making game characters feel realistic and believable – it’s a major hurdle in the gaming industry, and they’re tackling it in a unique way.
Our AI model represents a major leap forward in how AI characters behave. We’re moving into a future where these characters will have distinct personalities, remember past interactions, and even express emotions – becoming so realistic they’ll be hard to tell apart from human players. Ego is uniquely positioned to drive this change, and our founder, Vish, is exceptionally capable and determined.
EGO AI published a detailed report explaining the technology behind their AI characters and highlighting the advantages it offers, such as:
- More authentic gameplay
- Automatic population of game worlds
- Automated play and balance testing
EGO AI is building AI characters designed to feel remarkably human, giving them distinct personalities, needs, emotions, and the ability to remember things. They see this as just the beginning of what’s possible with this technology.
There are definitely some worrying aspects to this, especially the risk it poses to actors who might otherwise be performing these roles. As this EGO AI becomes more widely known, it’s likely to spark a lot of discussion.
