As a long-time admirer of Hisashi Kuroda’s masterpiece, Hunter x Hunter, I find myself consistently impressed by the depth and complexity of its characters, especially those who specialize in the Nen Type of Conjuration. The way these individuals manipulate their surroundings, be it through physical objects or abstract concepts, is nothing short of mesmerizing.
Among anime’s most intricate power structures, the Nen aura from Hunter X Hunter stands out as one of the most well-integrated. In essence, Nen refers to “Mind Force,” a skill that enables living beings to control their vital energy directly. This ability adheres to four primary principles and is categorized into six distinct groups, each offering unique capacities. However, this discussion centers on the Conjuration Nen type.
This article delves further into the workings of the Nen-type Conjuration, which primarily shapes material structures from an individual’s energy field. Keep in mind that this is simply an exploration of the inner workings associated with the Conjuration Nen type.
How Does The Conjuration Nen Type Work?
Principles Behind Conjuration Nen
Based on its name, the Nen type known as Conjuration suggests the capacity to generate or create using one’s Nen. In essence, this involves crafting tangible and self-governing items directly from a person’s aura. Among the most memorable examples that fit this description is Kurapika’s chain-like objects.
Users of the Nen-type conjuration possess a variety of techniques and abilities. They can establish rules and frameworks for the structures they create, tying them to a particular location. Additionally, they have the power to generate small, personal dimensions or pockets of space.
To fully grasp the art of Nen-type conjuration, one must undergo extensive visualization training. This aspect sets apart the skill and control over created constructs by conjurers. By “control,” we mean that once a conjurer has adeptly materialized a particular construct, they can instantly summon and dissipate it, regardless of location or time. Since these are purely Nen-based creations, conjuration is the sole method to utilize Nen for creating objects that regular non-Nen users can physically engage with, unless these objects are covertly concealed from their senses using In.
In addition to this, it’s worth noting that conjurers have the power to generate abilities using unseen structures, which are invisible to those without similar powers. These structures can be endowed with unique capabilities, such as Shizuku from the Phantom Troupe, who can produce a vacuum cleaner that continuously picks up items, yet it’s programmed not to suck up living beings or objects created using Nen. Some conjurers also have the ability to modify the length and size of their materialized constructs.
In some instances, objects or beings summoned (Conjured constructs) can maintain their existence independently from the Summoner over a significant distance. The longevity of these creations often reflects the proficiency of the conjurer. It’s worth mentioning that the six types of Nen aren’t set in stone, as they can overlap and influence each other to varying degrees. For Conjuration, it has the strongest affinity with Transmutation (80%) and the weakest connection with Emission (40%).
To sum up, Conjuration abilities are typically intricate and conditional, often incorporating specific conditions into the conjured items to boost their power. A notable example is Kurapika’s chains, particularly his binding chain which can only be used against the Phantom Troupe. If Kurapika were to breach this condition, it would result in his own death. This condition gave the chain extraordinary strength, even resisting Ugovin, a skilled Enhancer, who was unable to break it.
How To Become a Conjurer
Steps Nen Users Need To Take
Mastering the art of Conjuring primarily depends on the user’s natural aptitude towards that specific type of Nen, rather than actively choosing to be a Conjurer. To identify a person’s Nen type, including Conjuration, there are two main methods. The most common and well-known method is the Water Divination Test. This test involves placing a leaf on top of a glass filled with water, then concentrating an unusually high amount of aura into your hands while following the principles of Nen. If you’re a Conjurer, you will see impurities appearing in the water as a result.
An alternative, less commonly used method for identifying someone’s aura type is the Hisoka Personality Test, a tool developed by Hisoka that purportedly allows him to determine an individual’s Nen-type based on their personality traits. He proposes that each aura type generally shares similar characteristics. As such, in his view, those who exhibit sensitivity or nervousness, seriousness, and stoicism are likely to be Conjurers. These individuals are often cautious, leading to exceptional observational skills. Furthermore, they tend to be rational and composed, with this composure often evident in their training regimens. In other words, Hisoka suggests that if someone displays these characteristics, they are likely a Conjurer.
According to Izunavi, the path to mastering Conjuration starts with the aspiring Conjurer selecting an item they wish to manifest. This is followed by a rigorous exercise in visualization, where the Conjurer maintains constant contact with the chosen object, using all their senses to observe and memorize it. As training progresses, the Conjurer begins to dream about this specific object exclusively. The teacher subsequently removes the actual object, but the student continues their visualization practice without it. Over time, the student’s dreams transform into vivid hallucinations that intensify, eventually dominating their senses to the point where the student unintentionally summons the object. A key distinction between a proficient Conjurer and a Master lies in the depth and intensity of the visualization techniques employed by each.
Notable Users of Conjuration Nen Type
Character Profile: Kurapika
As a devoted admirer: Once a skilled hunter named Kite, under the tutelage of Ging Freecs, was tragically transformed into a Chimera Ant upon being slain by Neferpitou. Prior to his metamorphosis, Kite was a formidable Conjurer with a unique dual affinity for Transmutation. His power far surpassed that of most ordinary hunters. His Nen ability, ‘Crazy Slots,’ enabled him to summon an assortment of lethal constructs. This ability worked like a roulette, producing weapons accompanied by a Nen Beast – in Kite’s case, a Clown-like creature.
As a die-hard fan of the Phantom Troupe, I can’t help but admire the unique charm of member #12, Kortopi. Despite being the least physically imposing among the group and often maintaining a silent demeanor, Kortopi’s unwavering loyalty towards the Troupe and its charismatic leader, Chrollo, is nothing short of inspiring.
Shizuku Murasaki, being Member #8 in the Phantom Troupe, was known for being one of the less physically powerful members, alongside Kortopi. Despite this, she stood out due to her remarkable composure and lack of emotional expression, which often gave the impression of a soul devoid existence. This trait made her seem as cold and ruthless as her orders demanded. Shizuku’s abilities, however, surpassed those of an average Nen user, as she possessed conjuring skills. Her power enables her to summon a vacuum cleaner that can indefinitely suck up everything except living beings and objects infused with Nen.
Abengane was once a participant in the game known as Greed Island. Being one of the scarcer conjurers, he stands out due to his calm and intelligent demeanor. As a conjurer, Abengane possesses an exceptional talent in utilizing his innate abilities. His unique skill enables him to nullify the effects of Nen, acting somewhat like an exorcist by removing such effects from himself or others within the context of the series. Yet, this ability is not widely found, as only a handful of characters in the story can perform it.
Notable conjurers from the series also include Genthru, Hinrigh Biganduffno, Knuckle Bine, and Tsubone.
