Hyper Light Breaker Developer Heart Machine Suffers Layoffs

Hyper Light Breaker Developer Heart Machine Suffers Layoffs

As a gamer with a heart full of empathy and a decade-long connection with the ever-evolving gaming industry, I can’t help but feel a pang of sadness upon hearing about yet another studio layoff, this time affecting Heart Machine, the brilliant minds behind Hyper Light Drifter and its much-anticipated sequel, Hyper Light Breaker.

As a gamer, I’m hearing some disappointing news coming from one of my favorite game development studios, Heart Machine. They’re the folks behind Hyper Light Drifter and Hyper Light Breaker, and unfortunately, they’ve announced they’ll be letting go of some staff members.

According to Game Developer, a studio based in Los Angeles hasn’t provided a clear explanation for the recent job cuts, and they haven’t specified the exact number of employees affected. Nevertheless, they have announced that they will offer severance packages and health care coverage to the individuals who are being dismissed.

It was additionally confirmed that the forthcoming release of Hyper Light Breaker would remain unaffected by the recent job cuts.

The impending release of Hyper Light Breaker won’t be delayed by this unfortunate announcement; instead, it could serve as a catalyst for growth and new possibilities for those involved in the game during Early Access. Moreover, our other projects such as Possessor(s) will continue unscathed according to Yiyi Zhang, the studio community and PR manager, who spoke with Game Developer.

Zhang went on to say: “We’re truly grateful for the communities that have stood by us and other studios in our situation. We’re optimistic about the future of our upcoming games, our team members, and the gaming industry as a whole.

I’m thrilled to share that while the specific launch date is yet to be revealed, Heart Machine intends to unveil Hyper Light Breaker through early access in 2025. Initially slated for a late 2024 release, the game has been pushed back slightly following an announcement in August. Can’t wait to dive in!

2024 proved to be a challenging year for me as a games industry enthusiast, with layoffs resulting in over 14,100 jobs being lost, based on what I’ve gathered. Some reports suggest that this number could be significantly higher, potentially reaching up to 17,000.
