As a devoted gaming enthusiast, I can’t guarantee the perfection of every game launched in early access, but when it comes to sequels of cherished classics like Hades before last year and now Hyper Light Breaker this year, the anticipation is always high. Immersing myself into the 3D world of this upcoming Roguelike title during a play session with the developers, I can confidently say there are plenty of exciting elements that have me eager for its release.
In Hyper Light Breaker, you assume the role of one out of three characters, embarking on a quest through the Overgrowth with the ultimate goal of vanquishing the Abyss King. To accomplish this feat, you’ll gather loot to enhance your abilities and conquer his Crowns – formidable underbosses. Although the narrative wasn’t delved into deeply during the preview session, that’s simply because we were preoccupied with battling numerous enemies instead.
As a thrilled enthusiast, here’s my take: When Hyper Light Breaker enters early access, I’ll have three playable characters to choose from, and I’m beyond excited that I was given Goro, this badass raccoon-human hybrid, whom I would’ve picked anyway! My Editor-in-Chief and I were accompanied by a game developer who guided us through the chaos as waves of monsters attacked. I’ve always adored cooperative Roguelikes, and I can hardly contain my excitement to delve deeper into the mystical Overgrowth with my team!
In Hyper Light Breaker, the loop is captivating because unlike most Roguelikes that offer only one life and an immediate game over upon failure, this game features a shared life total for your group. This allows you to make mistakes and continue playing, making each game session potentially longer (at least two hours compared to the usual thirty minutes in this genre). You can also withdraw at any point, escaping danger after battling through enemy waves, which preserves your lives as a safety net. As a breaker, life is risky, especially since the game’s difficulty rises steadily as you defeat more enemies and collect more loot. Timely extraction and prudent progress are crucial for successfully completing a run and toppling the bosses.
As a gamer, I’d say a game like Hyper Light Breaker is only as thrilling as its combat system, and luckily, its combat is nothing short of spectacular! Unlike Elden Ring, this game leans more towards character action games. My chosen breaker can dish out combos and special moves based on the weapon I’m carrying. There’s a convenient set of icons in the lower right corner that gives me a glimpse of all the potent combat skills at my disposal, each with cooldown periods to manage wisely, and occasionally limited uses. For enemies at a distance, I’ve got a gun, but with ammo being scarce, it’s often smarter to charge in and save the ammo instead.
In many battles, your adversaries will retaliate equally as forcefully as you do. Therefore, mastering evasion, defense, and that skillful moment of perfect parry becomes crucial. Typically, I’m not great at parrying and often ignore it in melee combat games, but here the timing felt intuitive and the payoff for landing a successful one was satisfying. In Hyper Light Breaker, healing isn’t straightforward, so being able to regain some health by skillfully blocking attacks is terrific.
Instead of ordinary adversaries, Hyper Light Breaker truly shone when we encountered a Crown boss. Our particular foe was Dro, a large, slightly humanoid wolf with a menacing demeanor and dangerous moves. In his initial form, he employed a variety of swift melee attacks to dodge around the battlefield and pummel us mercilessly. After barely surviving that ordeal, things only grew more challenging. He launched countless deadly orbs across the screen, turning our conflict into a frenetic bullet hell dance that was both overwhelming and exhilarating. With both me and my editor knocked out, our guide deftly navigated through the bullets, casually mentioning that a team member from the development team could perfectly deflect every bullet during this phase. Overwhelmed by their skill, we continued on our journey, exploring more of what the Overgrowth had to offer.
Exploring the vibrant, treasure-laden universe of Hyper Light Breaker is an absolute pleasure. While its stunning visuals undeniably contribute to this enjoyment, it’s also the abundance of loot that makes you more powerful that adds to the charm. During my brief preview session, I didn’t quite get to savor the loop of discovering and equipping new equipment, but there were plenty of items I could’ve tinkered with, and I plan to do so when I spend more time with the game. Moreover, a hub area filled with opportunities to enhance skills and purchase upgrades awaits me, promising to consume all my free time as I strive to become the ultimate breaker in the Overgrowth.
Exploring the world in this game is even more exhilarating due to the unique ways of travel available. Instead of walking like in most games, Hyper Light Breaker offers a hoverboard that lets you zip around effortlessly at high speed, navigating the twists and turns of the map with ease. Additionally, there’s a glider you can use to fly through the air from higher vantage points, adding an extra layer of excitement to your journey. Despite the numerous enemies to battle, the fun of traveling between fights makes every adventure feel rewarding.
Speaking frankly, exploring just a fraction of Hyper Light Breaker was not enough to describe; instead, what I played was nothing short of remarkable. I can hardly wait to re-enter the Overgrowth and take on those formidable bosses. Although it may lack some content destined for the final version (which seems to involve additional bosses and new characters), this game is already a must-play. I’m confident that Hyper Light Breaker will become the next big success story in early access, and I plan to be there on day one with a grin on my face and a good chance of meeting an untimely demise.
Hyper Light Breaker is out on January 14th on PC via early access.
