Hyper Light Breaker’s Cursed Outpost, Explained

In the game Hyper Light Breaker, there’s a central location called the Cursed Outpost that serves as a safe haven for players during their adventures. After each game session, players can return to the Cursed Outpost, where they can enhance their gear, explore the environment, and immerse themselves in the game’s storyline.

Prior to the Early Access launch of “Hyper Light Breaker”, Game Rant had an opportunity to chat with senior designer Ben Strickland about the Cursed Outpost, which serves as a comforting anchor in the turbulent universe depicted in the sequel to “Hyper Light Drifter”.

The Hub City of Hyper Light Breaker

In roguelike games and other genres, hub cities offer crucial breaks between gameplay sessions, allowing players to enhance their gear, resupply, and prepare for the next challenge. However, in the game “Hyper Light Breaker“, the Cursed Outpost holds a greater significance than just a pit stop. It symbolizes tranquility amidst chaos, a steadfast presence in an ever-evolving world, making it a significant element given the cycles and runs in “Hyper Light Breaker“. As Strickland put it, this outpost serves as a beacon of calm in a stormy landscape.

In the game, The Cursed Outpost stands as the unchanging cornerstone amidst a world in perpetual transformation. Despite occasional new discoveries and merchants offering their wares, it offers a tranquil, relaxed ambiance that serves as a soothing refuge after the tumult of an adventure.

When Early Access starts on January 14, players will receive their unique apartments at the Cursed Outpost. From this base, they can undertake missions and explore different parts of the game’s world, which will consist of three out of four possible biomes at the Early Access release. Although the Cursed Outpost doesn’t undergo constant change like the rest of the world in Hyper Light Breaker, it is not static; instead, it offers a dynamic environment for players to interact with.

As the game advances, the Outpost initially begins as a modest base. However, the main city evolves and becomes personalized based on the players’ progression. The town expands organically due to the player’s actions, offering opportunities for them to purchase upgrades and equipment for future playthroughs. This growth in the city can then foster further development, creating an environment rich with possibilities.

Beyond the retail stores at Rainbow Market, the Cursed Outpost also boasts the top-rated lodging spot, known as The Best Hotel. This rundown and worn-out hotel is the central command for Breakers, adventurers similar to the player who delve into the Overgrowth, transforming the land, much like Australian Bushwackers or Monster Hunter’s Hunters. Serving as a strategic base of operations, this hub city offers another essential service – a refuge for weary travelers. Coming back to these hub cities is akin to finding a peaceful sanctuary, allowing them to recharge and regroup in a welcoming and comfortable atmosphere.

The Cursed Outpost is an enigmatic place with little understood about its origin, yet it seems to be the only reliable spot in a world that’s always shifting. This could suggest a unique connection to the Abyss King or other mysterious forces. As the game progresses through Early Access, players might start peeling back this mystery layer by layer.
