HyperX Cloud III headset review

HyperX Cloud III headset review

As a gamer who’s seen more than a few headsets come and go, I can confidently say that the HyperX Cloud III has made a lasting impression on me. It’s like finding a comfortable pair of old shoes that also happen to have premium materials and top-notch audio quality.

Once upon a time, I regretted splurging on video game add-ons such as controllers and headsets with my saved money. At that moment, they seemed less thrilling compared to brand new games. However, as I’ve gotten older, these tech gadgets with cool new functions have become just as exciting for me as the games themselves. Over time, my standards for headsets in particular have risen significantly, yet even so, the HyperX Cloud III did not fall short of my expectations.

First impressions are so important when it comes to new tech, and immediately the HyperX Cloud III ensured we got off on the right foot. The aluminium casing means that you know you’ve got a premium product in your hands, with enough weight to feel that this isn’t a cheap product. Admittedly the all black colour of headset I was sent for this review doesn’t exactly stand out from the crowd, but with a snazzier red and black combo available there are options depending on your tastes.

it provides a snug fit due to its memory foam ear cups, and even when worn, there’s minimal pressure so it avoids the discomfort of a sweaty head. What’s more, this headset’s comfort doesn’t compromise its durability; it can withstand the rage of a gamer who’s just been sniped from afar on the battlefield.

Nothing about the comfort or build quality of these headphones would matter if the sound quality wasn’t wonderful, but thankfully the HyperX Cloud III is no slouch in this department. The audio is lovely and by default ensures a balanced profile that’s great (although perhaps a little lacking in the bass department). Obviously for the mid-range £90 price point it also can’t compete with the most ridiculously premium headsets that cost five times the price, but as long as you’re not a particularly picky audiophile you’ll likely be delighted by the crisp audio that’s gives you the edge in a tense FPS shoot off.

Moving forward in our discussion about the exceptional HyperX Cloud III, let’s delve into its microphone quality. I haven’t encountered a clearer mic during my tests compared to this one on the Cloud III. Admittedly, it has an ever-so-slight artificial tone, but when clarity in communication with your team is crucial, this minor trade-off seems fair. However, for streamers who require versatility, this headset might not be the all-in-one solution you’re after, as there are other headsets tailored specifically for streaming. The Cloud III excels at providing an enjoyable gaming experience with friends instead.

I find immense joy in exploring the intricacies of new technology equipment, especially when these subtle aspects enhance my daily routines. For instance, one thoughtful feature of the HyperX Cloud III is the tiny red light at the tip of the microphone, which illuminates when muted, ensuring you never accidentally speak into a silent microphone again. Another detail that adds to the user-friendly experience is the volume wheel, which allows for precise adjustments, even to the slightest levels. The attention to these small yet significant details greatly enhances the overall user experience.

If there’s one negative that makes the HyperX Cloud III fall short of other headsets I’ve reviewed and used for years, it’s the lack of Bluetooth. Now admittedly this headset is sold as a gaming headset and not one that “does it all”, but for even a slightly cheaper price you could buy a headset that you can use for everything like the Rig 600 Pro. If that’s not what you’re looking for then you’ll be more than happy in camp HyperX though, and it’s hard to feel bad about that purchasing decision when your head is getting a warm foamy hug from this premium metal product.

Among mid-range priced headsets, it’s hard to find ones that outperform the HyperX Cloud III. Boasting excellent sound, a crystal-clear microphone, and exceptional comfort, this gaming headset delivers on almost every aspect you’d expect from a dedicated gaming device. The absence of Bluetooth functionality might limit its use for various audio tasks, but if that’s not a concern for you, the HyperX Cloud III is an effortless choice to make.
