The upcoming “Legend of Zelda” title has been revealed, yet it deviates from fan expectations despite its familiarity. The newly announced game is called “Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment“, marking the third full installment in the “Hyrule Warriors” series. This game will build on what 2020’s “Age of Calamity” initiated by delving deeper into the backstory of another contemporary “Zelda” game, much like how “Breath of the Wild‘s” memory flashbacks were expanded upon. This time, instead, we’ll get a closer look at the Imprisoning War from “Tears of the Kingdom“. This additional insight into “TotK“‘s story is exciting, but “Age of Imprisonment” introduces something new as well.
In contrast to previous “Hyrule Warriors” games, “Age of Imprisonment” is part of the official “Zelda” storyline. Nintendo announced this in a press release, effectively ruling out the continuation of the alternate timeline plot seen in “Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity.” Given the vast untouched periods during the era of the Imprisoning War, “Age of Imprisonment” could benefit from further development of the flashback scenes already present in “Tears of the Kingdom.” However, the fact that “Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment” is canon raises new questions about its character roster, a critical aspect for a “Warriors” title that cannot afford any mistakes.
Canonicity Calls Age of Imprisonment’s Cast Into Question
If the “Age of Imprisonment” is established as the basis, it means that this version of the game will have specific limitations regarding which playable characters can be included. The game takes place entirely in a time period where Princess Zelda is sent back to the ancient past as depicted in the opening scene of Tears of the Kingdom, and there are relatively few significant characters from that era. Given the pattern observed in previous Hyrule Warriors games, it’s expected that the initial roster for “Age of Imprisonment” will consist of:
- Princess Zelda
- King Rauru
- Mineru, Sage of Spirit
- Rito Sage of Wind
- Zora Sage of Water
- Goron Sage of Fire
- Gerudo Sage of Lightning
- Demon King Ganondorf
Alongside Queen Sonia and Phantom Ganon who seem promising additions, potentially bringing the character count to 8-10, it’s worth noting that nearly half of these characters remain unnamed. If Age of Imprisonment follows the established lore, time-traveling Sages and Champions won’t feature in the main narrative. Instead, Link could find himself stepping into Calamity Ganon’s role as a significant post-game character unlockable in Age of Calamity. Given that Age of Imprisonment will need to expand upon The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom’s flashbacks, it’s expected that the game will incorporate new content related to its playable roster, a convention typically seen in the Warriors series.
How Age of Imprisonment Can Work More Characters Into Its Canon Story
it is uncertain if Maz Koshia’s Sheikah Tribe coexisted with the last of the Zonai. This not only rules out his return, but also complicates introducing an Age of Imprisonment-like character similar to Impa. In simpler terms, we have several possibilities for characters beyond the one mentioned earlier in Age of Calamity, but there are challenges in bringing back certain characters due to their questionable canonicity and possible time discrepancies with other events within the game’s timeline.
Hyrule Warriors Will Need To Work Some OCs Into TotK’s Backstory
It seems highly probable that only the characters associated with the Secret Stones in Tears of the Kingdom will be playable throughout the storyline of Age of Imprisonment, with more characters joining later once the main story is complete. However, this might not be very appealing, so it’s likely that new characters will be introduced within the story, making use of the time gap suggested between several scenes involving Dragon Tears in TotK. The creators of Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment have a lot to do to preserve its consistency with the canon, whether this involves revealing the original forms of TotK’s elemental dragons or introducing new Zonai characters.
