The initial “Hyrule Warriors” game emerged for the Nintendo Wii U back in 2014, resulting from a partnership between Nintendo, Team Ninja, and Omega Force – the creators of the “Dynasty Warriors” series. True to its name, “Hyrule Warriors” merges characters and environments from “The Legend of Zelda” with the fast-paced hack-and-slash gameplay found in “Dynasty Warriors,” as Link and his companions engage in epic battles against hordes of enemies to safeguard Hyrule.

Initially, the game known as Hyrule Warriors was among the top-selling titles on the Nintendo Wii U. Subsequent versions followed on the Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo Switch. In 2020, a sequel was launched for the Switch, titled Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, which is a spin-off prequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Despite some criticism over its time travel plotline, it also proved to be a financial hit.

A new installment of the “Hyrule Warriors” series titled “Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment” has been announced for the Nintendo Switch 2. This game, developed by Koei Tecmo, is a prequel to “The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.” The trailer for “Age of Imprisonment” shows that once upon a time, the Zonai and Hylians built a prosperous kingdom together. However, their peace was disrupted by Ganondorf and his forces, leading to the Imprisoning War – a conflict that would shape the world players will explore in “Tears of the Kingdom.”

The trailer for Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment transitions to gameplay scenes, showcasing characters from Tears of the Kingdom‘s lore battling hordes of enemies. King Raru is seen wielding his staff to fell adversaries, Mineru summons an ancient Zonai mech to assault the foes, and I’m depicted dishing out a flurry of strikes with a mystical sword-like artifact.

During this week’s Nintendo Switch 2 Direct, we didn’t receive a specific launch date for Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment, but the trailer concluded by hinting that the game will arrive during winter. The livestream also brought other Zelda-related updates, as it was revealed that both Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom will be getting enhanced versions for the Nintendo Switch 2.
