
In Hytale, there are eight weapon types: six are physical and two use magic. How effective a weapon is depends on what it’s made of and the specific attacks it has. Simply looking at how rare the materials are doesn’t tell you much, because a weapon’s strength is directly tied to the quality of the ore. For example, mithril weapons are always better than adamantite, and cobalt is always better than copper. Better ore means a stronger weapon – this is a core part of how Hytale works and isn’t something that needs much explanation.
This guide doesn’t rank every weapon individually. Instead, it groups weapons by type and rates how effective each type is based on its attacks, strengths, and how well it performs against both enemies and other players. Here’s a breakdown of the rankings.

Daggers
- Basic Attack: Fast, nimble attacks that can be performed without stopping.
- Charge Attack: Launches the player forward a short distance, bouncing off the enemy if it hits.
- Alternate Attack: Block
- Signature Ability: Perform an empowered 3-move attack combo that deals serious damage.
Daggers are all about fast, relentless attacks. While each hit doesn’t do much damage on its own, you can string them together quickly to compensate. But what really sets Daggers apart as one of the best melee weapons in Hytale is their charge attack. Landing this attack not only hits the enemy, but also creates space between you and them, letting you avoid immediate retaliation.
A skilled player can use this move to bounce between enemies, allowing for quick and damaging attacks without taking any damage themselves. Plus, the forward momentum from the charge attack isn’t just for fighting – it can also be used to move around the game world much faster, saving a lot of travel time.
Sword
- Basic Attack: 3-move attack combo consisting of two diagonal swings, followed by a downward chop.
- Charge Attack: A short forward strike where the player plunges the sword in a straight thrust.
- Alternate Attack: Block
- Signature Ability: A circular slash that hits anything close to the player in an AoE, followed by an empowered forward thrust dealing massive damage.
In Hytale, swords are a well-rounded choice for combat. They deal good damage and have quicker attacks than many other melee weapons. However, the main reason they’re considered top-tier (S-Rank) is that you can hold a sword in one hand and still use another item – like a tool or a different weapon – in your other hand.
While exploring, players can hold a torch in their left hand. During battles, they can switch to a shield, significantly boosting their defense. The charge attack is also a great way to quickly close the distance and reach enemies who are further away.
A-Tier
Shortbow
- Basic Attack: Pull back the bow string and fire an arrow.
- Charge Attack: NIL
- Alternative Attack: Block
- Signature Ability: Fire three arrows at the same time.
In Hytale, shortbows are the best choice for fighting enemies from a distance. They let you attack with arrows, so you don’t have to get close to danger. How much damage a shortbow does depends on its quality and the type of arrows you use. These bows are known for their long range and accuracy, making them easy for anyone to learn. Their special ability lets you fire three arrows at once, significantly increasing your damage in a single shot.
Hand Crossbow
- Basic Attack: Fire six loaded arrows.
- Charge Attack: NIL
- Alternative Attack: Block
- Signature Ability: Charges up a single arrow to deal massive damage.
Hand Crossbows let you rapidly fire six arrows in a row. This quick firing speed allows you to unleash all six arrows almost immediately at enemies who are nearby or at a moderate distance. While Hand Crossbows shoot arrows quickly, each arrow has less power than those from a Shortbow, resulting in lower damage, slower speed, and a steeper drop. Because of this, Hand Crossbows have a shorter effective range than Shortbows, despite being ranged weapons.
I’ve been really getting into the Hand Crossbow, and one of the coolest things is how quickly you can fire off multiple bolts. It basically lets you take out tough enemies – like tanks – from a decent distance. Plus, because it’s a one-handed weapon, you can still hold a shield or even a torch in your other hand, which is a huge advantage over something like the Shortbow. It gives you way more options!

B-Tier
Battleaxe

The Battleaxe is a powerful two-handed weapon, dealing significant damage with each hit, but it’s a bit slow to swing. Its best features are its charged attack and unique signature move. A well-timed charged attack can instantly defeat dangerous enemies before they can react. However, it requires good prediction to land successfully. The signature move, if executed perfectly – maintaining contact with the enemy throughout the entire whirlwind – becomes the most damaging attack in the game. Despite these strengths, the Battleaxe’s slowness prevents it from being a top-tier weapon.
C-Tier
Mace
- Basic Attack: Three slow, lumbering diagonal swings that damage all enemies in a cone in front of the player.
- Charge Attack: A slower, powered-up version of the basic attack that deals even more damage.
- Alternate Attack: Block
- Signature Ability: A jump followed by a downward slam that deals AoE damage around the point of impact.
In Hytale, the Mace is a powerful two-handed weapon, dealing the most damage but with the slowest attack speed. It’s a dependable choice, but requires players to withstand some damage while they attack. Because of its slow speed and the need for precise timing, the Mace can be harder to use effectively than other weapons. However, when paired with the right character build, it can be incredibly strong.
The character’s standard attack is a slow swing that hits all enemies directly in front of them. They also have a charged attack, which is a more powerful, slower version of the standard attack, dealing increased damage. Finally, their special move involves jumping into the air and slamming down, causing area-of-effect damage where they land.
Flame Crystal Staff
- Basic Attack: A single fireball shot in a straight line.
- Charge Attack: An empowered fireball that deals increased AoE damage and can burn enemies.
- Alternate Attack: Transforms the staff into a fiery lance held in front of the player, dealing tick damage.
- Signature Ability: Summons a fiery whirlwind of fire that covers a large area selected by the player, burning anyone caught within the blast.
The Flame Crystal Staff is a weapon that lets you shoot fireballs, but it requires Essence of Fire for each shot. This makes it expensive to use consistently. While the damage isn’t amazing, it’s helpful in a tight spot. What sets it apart from weapons like bows and crossbows is that fireballs travel with perfect accuracy – they go exactly where you aim, making it a more reliable ranged option.
The Flame Crystal Staff has one major downside: it requires you to carry Essence of Fire to work. This item is only dropped by monsters, so using the staff effectively means you first need to spend time hunting for this material. Because standard weapons often do similar – or even more – damage, the effort isn’t usually worth it. However, when exploring especially dangerous areas like the Devastated Lands, the staff’s benefits can outweigh the hassle of collecting Essence of Fire.
D-Tier
Ice Crystal Staff
- Basic Attack: Swings the staff like a stick to hit enemies within melee range.
- Charge Attack: Summons a gale of cold air that travels a straight line, dealing single-target damage.
- Alternate Attack: Summons small icicles that shoot out of the staff in a straight line, dealing very low damage.
- Signature Ability: NIL
The Ice Crystal Staff is an unusual weapon. Similar to the Flame Staff, it attacks from a distance using magic. However, it’s weaker than most other weapons in Hytale in nearly every way. The Ice Crystal Staff doesn’t deal much damage, and even if its attacks were effective, its overall damage per second (DPS) is so low that it’s significantly worse than all other options.
The normal attack isn’t very effective. The charged attack does decent damage, but it’s slow and only hits one enemy. The alternate attack is a bit helpful due to its speed, but it costs Ice Essence with each hit and deals very little damage. Even with plenty of Essence, it drains stamina quickly, making the fast attack speed a drawback – you’ll run out of stamina after just 5 to 7 hits.
