Hytale Creator Reveals How the Game’s Story Will Progress in Early Access

After a month in Early Access, players have had a good chance to experience Hytale’s world, explore its environments, and test out the combat. However, the game’s main story isn’t available just yet. Currently, players can enjoy Exploration mode, which focuses on the core gameplay, or Creative mode, which offers powerful building tools. The story-driven Adventure mode is still under development and not accessible at this time.

Hypixel Studios founder Simon Collins-Laflamme recently explained on X why the main story of their game, Hytale, hasn’t been fully revealed yet. The story will be released gradually through updates, organized into chapters, focusing on an ongoing arc called the “Cursebreaker” story. Collins-Laflamme described this approach as a shared experience, emphasizing that the development of the story is a journey the team will take with the players.

Hytale’s Story Progression Will Serve as a Sign of the Game’s Development

A main point from Collins-Laflamme is that when Hytale enters Early Access, it won’t immediately play like a typical story-focused RPG. Instead of a big, cinematic story right away, the developers plan to introduce narrative gradually, through smaller, chapter-based updates. That doesn’t mean there’s no story at the start – players can already find bits of lore, like the Forgotten Temple and clues about the Cursebreaker storyline while they explore. However, the full Adventure Mode won’t be available at launch and is planned for a future 1.0 update.

Collins-Laflamme explained that players in Exploration Mode may have noticed the in-game curse is currently calm, but that will change when the first chapter starts. Players will then face tough decisions with significant and lasting effects on both the game world and their own character. This approach is interesting because it means the story and world of Hytale will evolve visibly as the game is developed. Players will witness the narrative unfold in real-time, rather than having to wait for the full Adventure Mode to be finished.

He described the game’s unfolding story as something the community experiences together, rather than a typical content release – a shared journey that will become a lasting memory for those who participate. This approach has been central to how Hytale was created, with player feedback driving development, particularly after a difficult period. The game was initially developed for years, then canceled by Riot Games in 2025. However, the creator regained the rights and restarted the project later that year, eventually launching Early Access on January 13, 2026.

This announcement clarifies how the story will unfold in Hytale‘s Early Access. Instead of releasing a complete story all at once, the narrative will be added gradually through chapters. In the beginning, players can look forward to a growing world with more details about the story appearing in the environment, hidden lore to discover, and choices that matter. While the full story is still some time away, experiencing it piece by piece will be a key part of playing Hytale during Early Access.
