Hytale is Being Accused of Giving Away Usernames

Some players of the game Hytale recently discovered that their usernames were taken and given to popular streamers and content creators, which caused frustration within the community. It appears Hytale has stopped doing this, but only after receiving criticism on social media.

Since its early access release in mid-January, the game Hytale, which is heavily inspired by Minecraft, has quickly become very popular, reaching a peak of 2.8 million players at the same time. Like Minecraft, Hytale features blocky graphics and diverse, randomly generated worlds. It appeals to many different types of players with its open-ended gameplay and a more story-driven Adventure Mode.

Hytale Accused of Stripping Players’ Usernames and Giving them to Streamers

Hytale has become popular quickly, making it difficult to secure desired usernames shortly after its early access release. There are now accusations that game staff have been giving special treatment to players with large social media followings by changing usernames that were already taken. A Reddit user named Mutated-Nut has collected several examples of this concerning behavior, which appears to involve at least one member of the game’s support team.

Several content creators have reported unexpectedly receiving their preferred usernames on the game Hytale. For example, YouTuber The_Horizon initially secured the username “The_Horizon” but was later able to change it to simply “Horizon,” even though another player had already claimed that name. Similarly, MashClash received the username “Mash” after contacting Hytale support, who he thanked for helping him align his in-game name with his YouTube channel. In at least one instance, a player who lost their username was assigned a default name – “CoralShield434” – a significant change from their original choice.

Just hours after the initial Reddit post, Simon Collins-Laflamme, the founder of Hypixel Studios, announced on social media that they were addressing the username issue and investigating what happened. He assured players they could continue enjoying Hytale with their friends without worrying about losing their usernames. Collins-Laflamme clarified that YouTubers or streamers can’t simply take usernames already in use. Players can still request a username someone else has, and the current owner will be notified by email, but they have the final say and can decline the request or ignore it. He also stated he would personally look into the situation, emphasizing that usernames will only be changed if they violate Hytale’s terms of service, such as containing inappropriate language.

The two YouTubers mentioned in the Reddit post have agreed to return the usernames they got from Hytale support. MashClash even tweeted that he’d already given the username “Mash” back to its original owner, sharing screenshots of a friendly conversation to show there are no hard feelings. This is a great sign of good sportsmanship among players. Considering over 1,900 fans petitioned to revive Hytale after its initial cancellation last June, the game seems to be building a strong and positive community.
