Hytale is a creative sandbox game created by Hypixel Studios. It almost didn’t happen – Riot Games canceled the project back in June. However, the game’s original creators bought it back and formed a new 50-person team. They’ve announced that players will be able to try out an early version of the game starting in January 2026.
The Hytale team is launching an early-access version of the game, and they’re being upfront about it – the current build is an older, unfinished one and will likely have bugs. However, with a focused development team and help from players, it will be exciting to see how Hytale develops in 2026.
Hytale Enters Early-Access On January 13th

Simon Collins-Laflamme, the founder of Hypixel, announced on X (formerly Twitter) on November 17th that his team had successfully purchased Hytale from Riot Games, marking a new beginning for the game.
It’s unusual to see progress happen so quickly, and there’s still a lot of work to do. However, Hypixel seems to have plenty of momentum. They’ve brought back 40 former employees and hired new people, and they’re planning to return to their original ideas for the game.

The Hytale developers recently announced they’re switching back to an older version of the game, one they originally used four years ago. In a blog post, they explained that while this older version might feel a bit outdated in some areas, it’s allowed them to regain progress and they’re working quickly to build the game they envision.
The Hytale team reports that the modding and creative tools are ready and will be included when early access begins.
Despite still having a lot of development ahead, Hytale will be available for pre-order starting December 13th, 2025, and players will be able to access an early version of the game on January 13th, 2026. The development team is now self-funding the project.
