Now that *Pokemon Legends: Z-A* has launched, players are quickly sharing tips for catching strong Pokemon and battling challenging opponents. Some are rushing to complete the game, while others are taking their time to explore and finish all of Mable’s research – and both approaches are perfectly valid. I enjoy a bit of both, and chatting with the characters in the game has revealed some interesting details, including a surprising connection to a hint from the Pokemon Pokedex in the Alola region.
Pokemon Legends: Z-A adds some new information to the Pokedex for certain Pokemon, but a lot of it is reused from previous games. The new Mega Evolutions do get entirely new entries, though. I like reading the Pokedex descriptions for my favorite Pokemon, but surprisingly, some of the most interesting details aren’t in the Pokedex itself or from the Professor. You actually have to talk to regular characters in the game to find them out. And I discovered something pretty unsettling: Vanillish, the ice cream Pokemon, apparently has internal organs! It’s… an ice cream cone with organs inside. However you phrase it, it’s pretty disgusting, and honestly, a little scary.
A character mentioned they’re with the Pokedex Research Society and theorized that Vanillish creates cold air using its insides. It actually makes sense – Pokemon must have organs beyond just brains! I guess I’d never really thought about it, since they often look so cute and strange. But now I’m picturing an ice cream cone with organs inside, which was a little too much, so I needed to take a break from the game.
According to the Pokedex in Pokemon Sun and Moon, Vanilluxe – the evolved form of Vanillish – has two heads and, surprisingly, two brains. Even more strangely, the Pokedex claims it can survive losing one of its heads. It’s a pretty unsettling idea!
Pokemon Legends: Z-A’s Weirdest Pokedex Entry is Already Clear

The game continues to be unsettling, and it’s made even worse by a random character asking how to deal with “Pokemon droppings” – basically, poop. Not only have I learned that one of my favorite Pokemon has internal organs, but now I also know it apparently digests food and eliminates waste. Honestly, I didn’t need to know that, and it’s completely ruined my craving for ice cream for the foreseeable future.
Looking back, there were already some strange details in previous games. For example, the entries for Pokémon like Vanillite said it’s created when a sunbeam hits an icicle that *doesn’t* want to melt. And apparently, people used Darumaka’s waste to stay warm! While odd details in the Pokémon descriptions aren’t unusual, these entries make you think a lot about the world of Pokémon, and it’s hard to find clear explanations for everything.
Pokemon Legends: Z-A’s New Mega Evolutions Are Officially Cursed

However, the Pokedex in *Pokemon Legends: Z-A* contains some strange and surprising information that challenges your understanding of Pokemon. Here are a few examples:
- Mega Clefable: “It flies by using the power of moonlight to control gravity within a radius of over 32 feet around it.” So what happens when it’s daytime? Does it lose the ability to fly? What happens if it’s flying high in the sky when dawn breaks?
- Mega Chandelure: “One of its eyes is a window linking our world with the afterlife. This Pokémon draws in hatred and converts it into power.” Pokemon Legends: Z-A casually confirms there is an afterlife where, presumably, both people and Pokemon go. This opens up a lot of possibilities for Ghost-type Pokemon, as they are sometimes defined as actual ghosts and others not.
- Mega Pyroar: “This Pokémon spews flames hotter than 18,000 degrees Fahrenheit. It swings around its grand, blazing mane as it protects its allies.” It’s worth noting that the surface of the sun is about 10,000 degrees Fahrenheit, so Mega Pyroar could melt virtually anything. The fact that this is also true for Magcargo makes me all the more uneasy, as rather than retconning this piece of information, the game is doubling down on it.
I’m still processing everything! Mega Pyroar is easily one of my favorite new Mega Evolutions in *Pokemon Legends: Z-A*, right up there with Mega Falinks. That means accepting it’s incredibly powerful – maybe even dangerously so – and that it probably has a full digestive system, like any living creature. It’s a bit strange, but at least Pyroar’s design is based on lions, which is cool. I honestly didn’t expect the game to confirm that Pokemon like Vannilite, Vanillish, and Vanillux have internal organs, but here we are!
Pokemon’s History of Messed-Up Pokedex Entries Continues in Legends: Z-A

Honestly, what did I expect? This is a kids’ franchise with some seriously creepy details. The Pokedex describes Pokémon like Phantump as haunted tree stumps and Palossand as being built on the bones of those it’s defeated. Others, like Drifloon and Hypno, actively kidnap children, and even Jigglypuff puts itself in danger when it sings. While all of that is unsettling, the idea of an ice cream Pokémon being made of internal organs is just… especially disturbing. If that doesn’t bother you, I’m not sure what will.
