I Just Platinumed The Most Overlooked Assassin’s Creed, And I Think It’s a Must-Play Ahead of The Black Flag Remake

Back in June 2023, Kotaku first reported that Ubisoft approved a remake of the popular game Assassin’s Creed Black Flag, originally released in 2013. Insider Gaming then stated in January 2024 that full development of the remake had begun in September 2023. Since then, numerous rumors and leaks have emerged, with the latest suggesting the Assassin’s Creed Black Flag remake could be released as soon as March 2026.

Ubisoft hasn’t officially confirmed it, but a remake of Assassin’s Creed Black Flag is widely expected. If it’s announced soon, many fans will likely want to replay the original game to remember what it was like. However, instead of revisiting Black Flag, I recommend those fans check out a lesser-known Assassin’s Creed title instead.

Getting The Platinum for The Ezio Trilogy

Okay, so I’m trying to fully complete every Assassin’s Creed game, and it’s taking a while. I’ve been a fan since I was a kid – I’m talking back when I was 11 and grabbing each new game on release day – but I honestly never bothered to get 100% completion in any of them. Plus, let’s be real, the story has gotten super complicated over the years with all the Assassins, Templars, Isu, and those Ancient Order guys. It’s hard to keep track of everything that’s happened over the last twenty years!

I started working towards earning Platinum Trophies in the Assassin’s Creed games in October 2023. Since the very first game didn’t have trophies, I decided to begin with Assassin’s Creed 2 – the game that first got me hooked on the series. Playing Assassin’s Creed 2 and Brotherhood through the Ezio Collection, I was happy to find they were just as enjoyable as I remembered. The parkour, combat system, engaging stories, and memorable characters all held up. Even the more repetitive tasks, like collecting Petruccio’s Feathers, weren’t too bad with a guide, and weren’t the hardest trophies in the series.

I haven’t really enjoyed Assassin’s Creed Revelations, and revisiting it in 2023 didn’t change that. While I appreciate seeing an older Ezio and the fact that it continues Altair’s story, the game always feels a little dull and lifeless to me. I’ve never found the story particularly engaging, and the gameplay feels repetitive, especially after playing the previous Ezio games. Getting the Platinum trophy was also frustrating due to some buggy trophies, and the first-person DLC is difficult to play.

Getting The Platinum for Assassin’s Creed 3

I finished all three Ezio games fairly quickly and needed a break from Assassin’s Creed. After playing Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, I started working towards the Platinum trophy in Assassin’s Creed 3 in April 2024. While AC3 wasn’t ever a top favorite of mine, revisiting it made me appreciate its story about the Assassins and Templars, Connor’s individual struggles, and how the game skillfully incorporates real historical events and people to make the conflict feel more meaningful and impactful.

I really enjoyed the story in Assassin’s Creed 3, but getting the Platinum trophy was a frustrating experience. Besides a long main story with some annoying side quests, the game had surprisingly hard minigames. My wife and I ended up playing Nine Men’s Morris on our laptop, and I even used the game’s hardest AI to help me win in Assassin’s Creed 3!

Getting the Platinum trophy in Assassin’s Creed 3 was surprisingly time-consuming and tedious, but I was eager to start Assassin’s Creed Black Flag, which is easily one of the best games in the series. However, a few hours into Black Flag, I discovered it had trophies that require playing with other people online. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find enough players to unlock them, as the online lobbies weren’t active enough.

After finishing Assassin’s Creed 3, I also earned the Platinum trophy for Assassin’s Creed Liberation. It’s a good game with a charming main character, but you can still tell it was originally made for the PlayStation Vita.

I was pretty bummed when a Platinum Trophy for Black Flag didn’t happen, but a few months ago I decided to jump back into the Assassin’s Creed series after a long break. Honestly, it’s been one of the best decisions I’ve made lately! I’ve completely fallen in love with Assassin’s Creed Rogue and it’s quickly become one of my favorite games in the whole series.

Why You Should Replay Assassin’s Creed Rogue in 2025/2026

A Fresh Perspective and A Ton of Fan-Service

When Assassin’s Creed Unity and Assassin’s Creed Rogue both came out in 2014, I, like many fans with new Xbox One or PlayStation 4 consoles, chose Unity. However, Rogue didn’t get a proper upgrade for those consoles until a 2018 remaster. By that time, the Assassin’s Creed series was moving towards more role-playing elements, and many players overlooked Rogue. It took me over ten years to finally play it, and I now believe it’s a fantastic game, particularly with the potential remake of Assassin’s Creed Black Flag on the horizon.

Okay, so if you haven’t played Assassin’s Creed Rogue, you play as Shay Patrick Cormac. He starts out as an Assassin, but then becomes a high-ranking member of the Templars. Honestly, it’s a really cool twist! It throws you for a loop with some unexpected story moments, and Shay is a surprisingly complex character – maybe even more so than some of the most popular Assassins. And the best part? His change feels totally justified and earned throughout the game.

Assassin’s Creed Rogue is full of delightful references for fans of the series, much like a Marvel Avengers movie. Without giving away any major plot points, the game takes place between Assassin’s Creed Black Flag and AC3, and it features plenty of familiar faces and story connections that longtime players will absolutely love.

What Assassin’s Creed Rogue Does Better Than Assassin’s Creed Black Flag

I think, and this might be an unpopular opinion, that Assassin’s Creed Rogue actually improves on some things in Black Flag. While Rogue uses the same basic gameplay as Black Flag – the fighting, climbing, and sailing – it streamlines the experience. A major improvement is the removal of those frustrating ‘follow this person’ missions that many players disliked in Black Flag. Plus, Rogue quickly gets you into the action, giving you a decent ship after only about an hour of play.

Assassin’s Creed Rogue’s Platinum Trophy Hunt Is a Fun One

As a fan, one of the best things about Assassin’s Creed Rogue is how enjoyable it is to earn the Platinum trophy. According to PSNProfiles, it should take around 35 hours, and they rate the difficulty as a 3 out of 10, which I’d agree with. It took me about 45 hours personally, but it definitely wasn’t a super challenging Platinum to get!

Earning the Platinum Trophy in Assassin’s Creed Rogue is a genuinely fun experience for most of the game. Completing the story is enjoyable, taking over all the forts feels rewarding, and exploring the world isn’t a tedious chore. The game offers plenty of fast travel locations across its three maps, and you don’t even need to collect everything to get the Platinum trophy.

That final 20% of the achievement can be really frustrating. The “What’s Yours Is Mine” trophy asks you to raid 20 ship convoys, which sounds easy, especially if you’ve upgraded your Morrigan. However, these convoys don’t appear very often. While certain areas have a higher chance of spawning them – I personally had the best luck south of Port Menier in the North Atlantic – it can still take hours to find all 20 needed to unlock the trophy.

After finally getting the trophy, I ran into another problem. While you don’t need perfect completion in this Assassin’s Creed game to earn the Platinum trophy, you still have to finish almost all of the Abstergo Challenges. This is because you need the cheats unlocked by those challenges to get the final trophies, and that takes a considerable amount of time.

Despite a few frustrating moments, I ultimately enjoyed Assassin’s Creed Rogue a lot. If you’re looking for another Assassin’s Creed game to play, I definitely recommend it. It feels a lot like Assassin’s Creed Black Flag, but it’s a bit more focused, polished, and has a story that’s just as good.
