Even if you’re a long-time fan of the Resident Evil games, there’s still more story to discover. Since 2008, Capcom has been creating computer-generated (CG) movies and series to fill in the gaps between the games. These CG projects – four movies and one mini-series so far – are officially considered part of the Resident Evil story.
To mark 30 years of the Resident Evil series, I watched all of the computer-animated Resident Evil movies and ranked them. While these films don’t significantly impact the main game storylines, even though they are considered official canon, they’re still enjoyable for dedicated fans.
Please note that this article has some SPOILERS for the Resident Evil franchise.
5. Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness
Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness is structured like a mini-series, but it’s essentially a computer-animated Resident Evil movie divided into four episodes. Although released in 2021, the story takes place after the events of Resident Evil: Degeneration, which feels oddly placed in the overall timeline and makes it hard to feel invested. Knowing that the plot won’t significantly affect future games or movies—as it’s set before many later installments—makes it even less essential. While the action and animation are decent, this series isn’t worth going out of your way to watch.
4. Resident Evil: Degeneration
I have fond memories of when this movie was first released on DVD. I was really excited about the small connections it made to the upcoming Resident Evil 5 game. Looking back at Degeneration in 2026, it’s still somewhat enjoyable and has a few standout scenes, but it’s not a very good movie overall. I still often quote Leon’s famous line, “Shoot them in the head,” and it was great to see Hunnigan from Resident Evil 4 again. However, the movie sticks too closely to the typical Resident Evil storyline, and the animation quality isn’t great. Leon’s character design, in particular, is quite unsettling.
3. Resident Evil: Vendetta
Resident Evil: Vendetta is one of the most action-filled CG movies in the series, and it delivers great scenes between Chris and Leon. The film also brings back Rebecca Chambers, letting fans see what she’s been doing since the first game. While not as enjoyable as Damnation, Vendetta is still funny and consistently keeps you entertained.
2. Resident Evil: Damnation
I didn’t enjoy Resident Evil: Damnation when it first came out in 2012, but I’ve completely forgotten why. Revisiting it now, I really appreciate how much it feels like Resident Evil 4, especially with the important role of the Plagas. The animation and character designs are a huge improvement over Degeneration, and Leon is genuinely funny throughout. There’s a darkly humorous moment where someone asks if an infected person can be saved, and Leon bluntly replies that even removing their spinal cord would only lead to paralysis or death. The story loses a little momentum towards the end, but overall it’s a thrilling, action-packed movie that’s definitely worth seeing, particularly if you’re a fan of Resident Evil 4.
1. Resident Evil: Death Island
So far, the best of the Resident Evil CG movies is the newest one, Death Island. Think of it as the Avengers: Endgame for these films – it finally brings together Rebecca, Claire, Chris, Leon, and Jill. The movie is full of enjoyable moments between the characters and even includes a reference to Piers Nivans from Resident Evil 6. It boasts the best action and animation we’ve seen in the series so far, and it really puts Jill Valentine in the spotlight, as she hasn’t gotten as much focus as other key characters.
Rumors are circulating about a potential new computer-generated (CG) Resident Evil movie, possibly featuring Sheva Alomar from Resident Evil 5. However, Capcom hasn’t confirmed anything yet. Fans generally like the CG Resident Evil films, so many are hoping Capcom is planning more.
