I played the final preview build of Monster Hunter Wilds, and the 2 beasts I hunted were the best kind of absolute freaks

Monster Hunter offers a vast array of experiences. It isn’t just about numerous monsters, but also countless atmospheres. What other game series could start with a child’s village being devastated by a enraged legendary creature, and then within an hour, dedicate several minutes to a scene featuring a muscular chicken chasing cats who are carrying a massive steak on their heads?

The game Wild switches between moments of genuine emotion, exciting action sequences, and outright frightening scenes, disregarding the usual consistency of tone. This isn’t the first Capcom game to achieve this balance successfully, but I’m eagerly anticipating more horror elements as I delve deeper into this Monster Hunter, as my brief encounter with them in a recent preview build left me wanting more.

Previously, we’ve highlighted the captivating storytelling segments of Monster Hunter during its early stages as significantly improved from past series installments. Upon revisiting these initial hunts at a Capcom preview event in January, my impression remained consistent. Now, let me delve into the novel elements: a couple of battles further along in the campaign that Capcom presented to me after I had familiarized myself with the insect glaive and relearned its essential aerial maneuver (a crucial glaive move omitted during the beta, but fortunately reinstated for the final version).

In more casual terms, the two beasts I encountered later in the game, absent from previous previews and the Monster Hunter Wilds beta, are undeniably some of Capcom’s most vile and bizarre inventions. Naturally, I engaged them shortly after tracking down a colossal flatulent monkey.

Initially, there was a creature named Rompopolo, described as a bulbous, slithery bird-like being that I suspect is filled with a substance used to create nightmares. It’s hard to imagine such a creature having a beak, let alone a long tongue!! The artist responsible for designing Rompopolo at Capcom deserves both recognition and a spot on an online watchlist due to their terrifying creation.

Previously, Capcom demonstrated this bag of shrieks, but now I had the chance to battle it. To my surprise, it was simpler to defeat than expected, which leaves me concerned about potential additional abilities that Rompopolo might unleash in a future superior form.

In a different phraseology, the second beast I encountered was called Nerscylla, a creature hailing from an earlier installment in the series and surpassing the standard fear factor associated with “large spider” due to its unique feature – a large, draping, fleshy hood-like covering. Unfortunately, I only battled this beast once, but it seemed like it was wearing some sort of monster cape or had shed its skin but didn’t clean up the excess. Perhaps a little extra flesh isn’t so bad, they say.

As a dedicated fan, let me share my thoughts on the latest adventure in Monster Hunter Wilds. While Nerscylla seemed slightly more challenging due to its spindly legs, taking it down with a four-player team was still manageable. The new wound system, which allows for strategic targeting of specific body parts to inflict extra damage and stagger monsters, definitely makes the game feel less demanding than Monster Hunter: World overall. However, I’m well aware that I might bite off more than I can chew once I delve into some of the High Rank hunts in the final version of the game.

I’m eagerly hoping that some of the upcoming monsters will match the unsettling body horror of Rompopolo or the nerve-wracking arachnophobia inducing effect of Nerscylla. Perhaps a more twisted variant of Vaal Hazak? Or maybe something completely novel? It’s intriguing to imagine if Capcom will ever dare to have Monster Hunters face off against the most terrifying prey possible… humans! 😱

The most formidable beasts in Monster Hunter Wilds won’t be available until February 27 for you to battle, but there are some great battles yet to come during the remaining days of the open beta, which runs from February 13 to 16.
