Indeed, the chocobo from Monster Hunter Wilds – or as you might call it, Seikret – is an endearing birdly companion in the series. It allows me to traverse maps swiftly, carry a secondary weapon for tactical swaps during battles, and reach hidden spots scattered throughout the Forbidden Lands.

Managing this game is quite convenient, but let me tell you, controlling my character can be downright frustrating at times. Hours seemed to slip away as I grew more and more agitated with the wayward behavior of my Seikret companion. Time after time, I found myself missing essential resources while desperately trying to make him skid to a halt with repeated R2 presses. Even checking the map proved futile as it often led to him straying off course. What’s your deal, birdie? Where are you darting off to now?

By design, the Seikret generally follows its built-in navigation system, which means it will automatically head towards any marked destination such as a monster, resource point, or temporary camp. This is a handy improvement over Monster Hunter: World as it eliminates the issue of getting lost in the wilderness (except for rare instances where my Seikret might get perplexed and move in circles) and also removes the need for a difficult, self-guided trek to reach the target.

As a gamer, when I venture off the set path, it feels like I’m slogging through thick swampy terrain. This blasted game, Seikret, seems intent on keeping me on track, and even in manual mode, it doesn’t feel as intuitive as I’d hoped. In fact, I found myself so frustrated that I delved into the menu options, hunting for a way to make things smoother. Luckily, I discovered a solution.

How to change to Monster Hunter Wilds’ better Seikret controls

It appears that within the settings of Monster Hunter Wilds, there are actually two distinct types of Secret movement controls hidden away. In my personal viewpoint, the control type that comes as the default setting isn’t nearly as effective or user-friendly as the other one.

To locate Secret settings, navigate to Settings > Controls, where they are situated on the subsequent page for you. For my part, the most significant adjustment I made was switching Secret Manual Controls from Type 1 to Type 2.

Type 2 implies that instead of the Seikrets continuing on their course without intervention, you have more direct control over it, similar to managing your own hound. Pushing ahead will cause the Seikret to advance, while releasing pressure will make it halt, as originally designed.

Hold on, there’s a bonus feature! Instead of the standard automatic movement when you mount your Seikret, you can change this so that activating it triggers manual control. Moreover, you have the option to customize the level of control required before your Seikret deviates from its set path, or even add an extra command for a whistle call to summon it.

Beyond everything else, there’s a last, hidden setting that greatly enhanced my satisfaction with my mount. In truth, I was tempted to write “hidden secret”—it’s just tucked away in another menu. The Game Settings, on the third page, houses the Secret Auto-explore setting. If you disable it, the pesky bird will no longer stray every time you pause for even a few seconds to consider your next move.

For the quick rundown, here are all the settings you need for your Seikret movement:

  • Seikret Auto-explore – Options menu: Turn off
  • Seikret Manual Controls – Controls menu: Type 2
  • Seikret-only Route Controls – Controls menu: Type 1
  • Call Seikret Controls – Controls menu: Type 2 or 3, depending on your preferences
  • Call Seikret Controls (Radial Menu) – Controls menu: Auto-move or Manual Movement, depending on your preferences

After adjusting the settings and taking control myself, I no longer clench my teeth whenever I have to go somewhere other than straight into a hunt or headlong into a pile of bones. To be fair, having more control means I now have to press R1 continuously to make my Seikret run at full speed instead of just pressing the button several times and then going to make coffee. However, this change prevents me from getting distracted by my second monitor, which I was definitely doing before I made the switch, apologies for that.
