Like a lot of Pokémon fans, I’m really excited to see what Game Freak does with the next generation, Generation 10. I haven’t purchased a Nintendo Switch 2 yet because the current games available on it don’t really appeal to me. However, even if the Switch 2 ends up being expensive due to potential hardware issues, I’ll still be sure to check out any new, main-series Pokémon games. I’ve been following the leaks – often called “Teraleak 2” – and so far, the game sounds fantastic. Ultimately, the success of the game will depend on the new Pokémon themselves. And if the leaks are accurate, I think I’ve figured out what the Water-type starter Pokémon will be.
Recent leaks, known as Teraleak 2, suggest the next generation of Pokemon – Generation 10 – will be called Pokemon Winds or Pokemon Waves. The game’s region appears to be heavily influenced by Southeast Asia, featuring a large archipelago that might even use some randomly generated elements. Players will likely begin their journey in a bustling city, a popular tourist destination with a nearby resort, where they’ll choose their first Pokemon. Interestingly, if these leaks are accurate, the Water-type starter Pokemon could be based on a proboscis monkey.
All The Reasons Pokemon Gen 10’s Water Starter Could Be Based on a Proboscis Monkey
Proboscis monkeys, also known as long-nosed monkeys, are easily recognized by their large noses and reddish-brown fur. They have long tails and are found only on the island of Borneo, primarily in mangrove forests and along the coast. These monkeys are excellent swimmers and feel just as at home in the water as they do in trees. This unique combination of traits makes them a logical inspiration for a real-world creature, and there are other reasons to support this idea as well.

Pokemon Gen 10: Location, Location, Location
According to recent leaks, the first Pokémon you’ll choose in the next generation will be found in a resort town. Traditionally, there’s always a reason given for why a professor has those specific starter Pokémon – like why Professor Oak had Charmander, Squirtle, and Bulbasaur. Having a good story reason for the new starters would make the game feel more connected. This is even more important if the leaks are true, because it doesn’t seem like you’ll be getting them from a lab this time, but encountering them in a more realistic setting. Unlike in Pokémon Legends: Arceus, you won’t find these starters just wandering around a city. However, since the leaked monkey Pokémon lives in coastal areas and the resort town is likely by the beach, it makes sense for it to be one of the starters.
I might be correct that a Pokémon could be based on a proboscis monkey, but I could be wrong about it being a starter Pokémon. I don’t have any real reason to believe it is a starter, it just feels right.
A Proboscis Monkey Supports the Water Starter Theory
Each generation of Pokémon starters typically follows a common theme. For example, the starters from Generation 6 were designed around classic RPG classes – Chesnaught as a warrior, Delphox as a mage, and Greninja as a rogue. Later generations continued this trend, with Generation 7 drawing inspiration from Hawaiian and Polynesian culture, Generation 8 looking to British themes, and Generation 9 featuring performers inspired by the Iberian Peninsula. It’s logical to predict that Generation 10’s starters will be based on Southeast Asia, and the proboscis monkey would be a fitting choice. Beyond these generational connections, there are also ongoing theories about Pokémon types.
Many Fire-type starter Pokémon seem inspired by the signs of the Zodiac. Some fans also think Water-type starters are based on weapons – like Blastoise resembling a cannon, Inteleon a sniper rifle, and Samurott a katana. While this idea isn’t perfect for all Water starters (Feraligatr’s brass knuckles or Primarina’s musical instruments are a bit different), it’s an interesting theory. Interestingly, the large nose of the proboscis monkey isn’t just for attracting mates. It also helps them warn each other of danger, like a crocodile sneaking up. This suggests the design could be seen as a natural ‘war horn,’ which actually fits the weapon-based theory better than some of the current Water-type Pokémon.
Pokemon Gen 10 Could Finally Complete a Trifecta
This isn’t strong proof, but it’s an interesting observation: many Pokémon starters from different generations seem to draw inspiration from two particular creatures, but rarely from three.
- Totodile and Fuecoco are based on crocodiles, but there’s no grass crocodile.
- Squirtle and Turtwig are based on turtles, but there’s no fire turtle.
- Sprigatito and Litten are based on cats, but there’s no water cat.
As a huge Pokémon fan, I’m really hoping we get a Water-type monkey starter! We’ve already had Grookey, the Grass-type, and Chimchar, the Fire-type, so a Water-type would complete an awesome trio. Each Pokémon needs a unique design, and a proboscis monkey – with its big nose! – would definitely stand out from the other two. It would be so cool if future Pokémon generations continued this trend, adding one monkey starter each time. Honestly, just the idea of a perfectly symmetrical and beautiful monkey starter trio makes me so happy!
Considering Game Freak might want to complete more thematic trios in the next generation of games, a crocodile-like Grass-type Pokémon also fits well. Siamese crocodiles are native to Southeast Asia, and interestingly, they build nests using plants and mud. The proboscis monkey even uses its nose to warn others about crocodiles. Maybe the initial conflict in the next generation will involve a Water-type monkey, a Grass-type crocodile, and a Fire-type starter Pokémon.
Pokemon Concierge Feels Like a Gen 10 Teaser Now
Looking back, it’s become easier to spot hints about upcoming Pokemon generations. For example, the artwork of oranges and grapes in Pokemon Sword and Shield later turned out to be a teaser for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. The new Pokemon Concierge series feels like a similar hint for Generation 10. While the recent leaks (often called the “Teraleak”) have made things obvious, the show’s setting – a seaside resort – could support those leaks, especially regarding how players will first meet the new starter Pokemon. The location also seems to fit the rumors that Generation 10 will be inspired by Southeast Asia, potentially linking to a game tentatively called Pokemon Wind and Waves.
Okay, so the evidence isn’t super solid, but the recent Concierge update definitely feels like a little hint at what’s coming in Generation 10. It just fits with the leaks about how we’ll meet the starter Pokémon, and maybe even gives us a peek at what they’ll look like. I’ve been thinking, a Water-type starter based on a proboscis monkey – with its big nose acting like a horn – could totally have that waiter-like quality we saw in the update. There are tons of possibilities, of course, but until Game Freak officially shows us the new starters, I’ve convinced myself this is a good theory!
