I Think I’ve Figured Out What Overwatch 2 is Doing With the Story

Overwatch 2 story speculation and potential plot spoilers ahead.

The new hero Vendetta has arrived in Overwatch 2, and she’s unique! This sword-wielding gladiator is the first damage-dealing character focused entirely on close-combat attacks. But what’s really interesting is her backstory: Vendetta is the daughter of a former Talon leader who was killed by Blackwatch, meaning she’s seeking revenge against both Overwatch and Talon. It looks like Overwatch 2 is positioning Vendetta to be a key villain in the game’s future.

Okay, so I’ve been digging into things, and it looks like this new melee hero coming to Overwatch 2 might be way more important than we think. I’ve been piecing together hints from the game, little stories, and even some leaks, and it’s pointing towards a huge change in the Overwatch story. Honestly, I think this character, Vendetta, is going to be the leader of a whole new group – a third faction rising up against both Talon and Overwatch. It looks like she’s going to pull in some of the newer heroes to fight alongside her. Now, I could totally be off base here, but it feels like there’s a massive, years-long conspiracy unfolding right under our noses!

Vendetta Might Cause Biggest Plot Twist in Overwatch 2 History

How Overwatch 2’s New Hero Might Change the Game

The new trailer for Vendetta reveals she’s the daughter of Antonio Giordani, who used to be a smuggler, arms dealer, and worked for the Talon organization. He’s ‘former’ because Gabriel Reyes killed him during the Retribution mission in the original Overwatch game – a decision that upset Cole Cassidy, a fellow operative. Because of the actions of Reyes, Cassidy, Genji, and Moira, Vendetta’s life was changed, and she’s now seeking revenge.

Growing up, Vendetta became a famous gladiator in the Colosseum, renowned for defeating powerful war machines using only her energy-based greatsword, the Palatine Fang. But in a cinematic for Overwatch 2, she reveals this is all part of a larger plan. She’s using her popularity, victories, and the loyalty of her fans to reclaim what she believes was taken from her people.

There’s growing evidence that Vendetta is about to make a major play, and recent rumors seem to confirm it. A reliable Overwatch 2 source claims that an upcoming cinematic will show Vendetta attacking Talon HQ, severely injuring Doomfist by cutting off his arm, and throwing him out a window. This attack is expected to trigger a significant response from Talon, including them discovering the location of Overwatch’s secret base. While this information hasn’t been officially confirmed, the leaker has accurately predicted past Overwatch content – including a comic featuring Ramattra and Zenyatta, and details about Vendetta and her connection to Antonio – which makes this new rumor potentially believable.

This new hero has a personal grudge against both Talon and Overwatch. Her father was killed by Reaper, who is now a member of Talon, and Moira is a leader within the organization. On the side of Overwatch, both Cassidy and Genji are now part of the team, and it’s worth noting that Blackwatch used to be a part of Overwatch. Given all this, her desire for revenge is understandable, and taking control of Talon would give her the power to get even with both groups.

If the recent rumors are correct, Doomfist might be leaving Talon. This would likely cause Vendetta to want to eliminate Reaper, for understandable reasons. Moira could also be in danger because of her involvement in Antonio’s death. However, Sigma and Maximilien, who are expected to appear in an upcoming cinematic, might join forces with Vendetta – Sigma to survive, and Maximilien for personal gain. Sombra and Mauga don’t have strong ties to Doomfist, so they could easily support Vendetta’s new version of Talon, while Widowmaker’s loyalties are uncertain.

It’s easy to imagine Vendetta expanding his team beyond Mauga, and several newer heroes would be a good fit. Illari, Hazard, and Freja all share a sense of dissatisfaction and bitterness towards both Overwatch and Talon, making them ideal candidates for Vendetta’s revamped Talon organization.

  • Illari is aimless and alone after the death of the other Inti warriors, and has had sympathetic interactions with Talon-aligned characters like Doomfist, Sombra, and Widowmaker.
  • Hazard was crippled in the crossfire between Talon and Overwatch, and stole the powerful vanadium isotope from Moira.
  • Freja, a former search and rescue operative of Overwatch, was left bitter when the world turned its back on the organization, and has taken bounties from Talon executive Maximilien.

Several new heroes have appeared in Overwatch 2. Sojourn, Juno, and Wuyang are now part of Overwatch, while Ramattra is the leader of Null Sector and Junker Queen governs Junkertown. Kiriko, Lifeweaver, and Venture each work with their own separate organizations, but their commitment to doing good makes it unlikely they’d ever side with the villainous Vendetta.

Illari hasn’t been heavily involved in the story of Overwatch 2, appearing only briefly with Soldier: 76 in the “Futures Past” arc. Turning her into a villain would be a dramatic way to integrate her into the main narrative, and it could open up possibilities for her to eventually become a hero again.

The conspiracy at play might be even bigger than we think. The short story “Lucky Man” showed that a hidden group – symbolized by an eye with three dots – destroyed Overwatch headquarters. Sombra has been investigating this organization for years. It’s unclear how this group would gain from Vendetta’s actions, but they appear to benefit from the conflict between Overwatch and Talon, so their involvement wouldn’t be surprising.

Overwatch 2 is Preparing for a New Storyline

Evidence within Overwatch 2 itself suggests a major story event is coming. The mid-Season 19 update included a Story section where players can read important cinematics and comics. This section currently features most of this year’s lore, including the video of Freja meeting Maximilien, and has a placeholder labeled “Coming Soon.” This empty slot is exactly where the leaked cinematic showing Vendetta’s takeover of Talon would fit.

Ramattra and Null Sector are no longer the main threat, and a new villain is now stepping forward.

With the emergence of Vendetta and her organization, a new force may enter the conflict between Overwatch and Talon. It’s even possible that former Talon members – perhaps even Doomfist, if he lives – could join forces with Overwatch to defeat Vendetta. This could create a compelling new storyline for Overwatch 2, though it’s just speculation at this point. Either way, big changes are coming to Overwatch 2, and Vendetta appears to be at the center of it all.
