Dungeons & Dragons is famous for its incredibly detailed and memorable fictional settings, not just within tabletop role-playing games, but throughout the entire fantasy genre. From lively cities to stunning landscapes and the haunting remains of lost civilizations, Dungeons & Dragons offers a huge variety of immersive places.
Even places that seem safe to adventurers can be surprisingly dangerous. Dungeon Masters often enjoy revealing hidden threats in familiar locations, especially when players feel secure. Dungeon Master Oskar shared some examples from Dungeons & Dragons – places that are much more perilous than they initially seem.
Red Larch
All Roads Lead To Red Larch, For Better Or Worse
Red Larch is a vital hub on the Sword Coast, as all roads eventually lead through it. This bustling town is a major center for trade caravans, making it a place of interest for many different groups – both helpful and dangerous. Representatives from powerful factions like the Emerald Enclaves, the Order of the Gauntlet, and even the secretive Zhentarim are all present, because of a growing threat: dangerous elemental cults aiming to destroy the world and usher in a new era for their ancient masters.
Things are really complicated around Red Larch. It’s not just a place where different groups are constantly clashing – politically and religiously – but we’ve also got giants wandering the countryside! They’re searching for pieces of some old, powerful object, and honestly, it sounds like they’re gearing up for a war with the dragons. We’re seeing a lot of fire giants near town, which is especially worrying. It feels like trouble is brewing, and it’s definitely making life here a bit tense.
Phandelver
The Orcs Yearn For The Mines
Phandelver is a small mining town nestled in the hills near the Sword Coast, and it’s become known as a magnet for adventurers – sometimes overly eager ones! It’s the starting point for many new Dungeons & Dragons players, as it’s featured in the game’s Starter Kit and designed to teach them the ropes. The town offers plenty of challenges that are perfect for beginners. Adding to the danger, a young green dragon prowls the nearby mountains, attacking anyone who gets too close and frightening the villagers with its poisonous breath.
The region is frequently raided by orcs, ogres, and goblins who steal from and destroy local forts and taverns. Players familiar with the adventure Phandelver likely remember their first experience with Ochre Jellies – those unusual, poisonous creatures often introduce players to the stranger side of Dungeons & Dragons.
Chult
A Prehistoric Death Trap
At first glance, Chult appears to be an idyllic tropical island with a mix of reptilian and tribal folk inhabiting the area. More advanced players may even find themselves visiting the beach ports on their travels, but hidden deep inside the undergrowth is a world of savagery and death.
Chult is a dangerous island filled with dinosaurs, crumbling temples haunted by spirits, and deadly monsters lurking in the ruins along the coast. What makes it especially perilous is a curse that prevents anyone from being resurrected, making it a truly deadly location in the Tomb of Annihilation adventure.
Parnast
Beware Of Hidden Cult Activity
Parnast is the smallest town on our list, but don’t let its size fool you – it’s surprisingly dangerous. Situated on the wild Savage Frontier in northwestern Faerûn, Parnast serves as a key location for the Zhentarim to secretly gather resources. After the Zhentarim’s influence weakened, the town enjoyed twenty years of peace and quiet.
The town of Parnast suffered for a year under the control of the Cult of the Dragon, who used it as a base for their attacks with the help of a powerful cloud giant. When they finally left, the town was left scarred by their rule. Now, whispers suggest the Zhentarim are planning to take advantage of the vulnerable mountain town and recover some of their lost possessions.
Ten Towns
Frost Maiden Central
The Ten Towns is a region in the far north of Faerûn, perpetually gripped by winter. It’s a land of frozen lakes and rivers, all feeding the power of Auril, the Frost Maiden – a bitter and ancient goddess of cold and frost. Auril is part of a group of unpredictable, often aggressive gods, and she thrives on the fear people have of the cold and the dangers hidden in the snow, finding a dark satisfaction in every life lost to her icy power.
This desolate land is full of dangerous creatures – ice giants, dragons, and other terrifying threats. What starts as a simple journey to stay warm and fed quickly becomes a desperate fight for survival. The people of the Ten Villages are especially unforgiving, and will immediately execute anyone they discover to be a shapechanger.
Purple Rock
The Gods Are Fickle
This mild island chain seems peaceful on the surface, but it holds hidden dangers. Magic users quickly discover the locals strongly oppose magic, and using it can result in execution. The people of Purple Rock are deeply religious, worshipping Auril, the Frost Maiden, Tempus, the god of battles, and Umberlee, the goddess of the sea.
When the gods of the island are angered, Purple Rock becomes shrouded in dense fog and can suffer unexpectedly harsh winters lasting as long as eight years. Adding to these threats, a rather arrogant Copper Dragon now lives in the islands and has become a sort of guardian to a band of adventurers known as the Galadran Company.
Star Mounts
Deceptively Large And Inhospitable
The Star Mounts is a harsh, arctic region in northern Faerûn, known for its treacherous peaks. It’s said that exiled dragons and other dangerous creatures are sent there, with the hope the environment will eliminate them. However, from afar, it can easily be mistaken for a typical mountain range.
From a distance, the mountains appear ordinary, with forests, clouds, snow, and rivers. But this hides how dangerous it is to travel through them. Only the Aarakocra – bird-like people found across Faerûn – have figured out how to live safely among the peaks, building their nests where they’re protected from the fierce winds.
Anarouch Desert
Barren Wastelands Filled With Raiders
The name “Anarouch” originally referred to the icy regions of the far north, but now it’s used to describe any desolate, dangerous wilderness like it. The Zhentarim heavily guard their trade routes through this area, as they often face attacks from goblins and Bedine raiders.
The desert is divided into three main areas: The High Ice, where temperatures plummet and icy dunes constantly reshape the landscape; the Plain of Standing Stones, a large, rocky expanse at the desert’s center; and The Sword, a scorching hot region located to the south.
The Feywild
Whimsy Only Goes So Far
Many players picture friendly elves and playful fairies when they think of the Feywild. While traveling to another plane of existence sounds exciting, the Feywild is more dangerous than it appears. Though it might seem similar to our world, the Feywild is filled with unpredictable, raw magic that constantly changes things. It’s a realm of illusions and trickery, where appearances can be deceiving.
Terrifyingly clever creatures like Displacer Beasts create illusions to ambush their victims, while wicked hags use deceptive language to trap people into terrible bargains and debts. This can turn innocent travelers into forced servants, or worse. The Harigon, a race of rabbit folk, and other intelligent animal species aren’t usually dangerous; they prefer playing pranks and creating trouble for adventurers.
Yartar
Espionage And Political Intrigue
Yartar is a trading town located just north of Red Larch and the Sumber Hills. It could have become a major power in Faerûn, but secret enemies undermined the efforts of its leaders. Like Red Larch, Yartar struggles with giants and cults, but its larger size also makes it a target for aggressive political maneuvering.
The spies working for Harper and the Zhentarim assassins operating in the city are signs of a much bigger, long-standing political struggle. Adding to the tension, a dispute between Triboar and Yartar concerning missing gold has strained city resources and made visitors feel unwelcome.
