Famous game developer Hideki Kamiya, who created the popular hack-and-slash series Devil May Cry, has expressed thoughts about a potential remake of this game. Given his role as the original creator, he is particularly suited to shine light on a possible return of Devil May Cry in the not-too-distant future.
Capcom has made an effort to restart the series, with the 2013 game DmC: Devil May Cry, but none of the main games have ever been remade from scratch. However, Capcom has done well by returning to another one of their major franchises. The remakes of early Resident Evil titles (like Resident Evil 2, originally helmed by Hideki Kamiya), have been both critically and commercially successful for Capcom in recent years. Given this trend, it’s possible that we might see a remake of Devil May Cry in the future as well.
On his YouTube channel, Kamiya answered questions from fans in a video with auto-dubbing. He discussed various subjects, including his personal life and opinions on contemporary puzzle games. However, what stood out most was his expressed interest in reworking one of his old titles, saying, “Regarding a Devil May Cry remake – absolutely, I’d be thrilled about that prospect.” Although Kamiya seldom plays his own games, he has seen enough of DMC to recognize it needs an upgrade. He occasionally watches gameplay clips and thinks, “This definitely feels like a 24-year-old game design.” Despite his longing to revisit the series, Kamiya made it clear that he wasn’t involved in any ongoing DMC projects at this time.
Hideki Kamiya Would ‘Love’ to Remake Devil May Cry
Kamiya further discussed his ongoing action game series, Bayonetta. Regarding the future of this franchise, he emphasized his wish for Cereza’s journey to persist, despite no longer being at PlatinumGames. In response to a query about the ending of Bayonetta 3, he confessed that he didn’t have a chance to fully develop Singularity’s backstory, which some critics felt was a weakness in the game’s narrative. Kamiya explained his reasoning for the abbreviated plotline in Bayonetta 3, admitting regret over the extensive cutscenes in the first game and choosing to streamline dialogue and prioritize gameplay in subsequent installments to minimize player downtime.
Following Kamiya’s exit from PlatinumGames in 2023, his newly founded studio, Clovers, collaborated with their former partner Capcom on a follow-up to the 2006 hit game Okami. For his next venture after this project, Kamiya has plenty of opportunities to explore.
