ID Software Could Be Returning To Quake

It looks like ID Software may be revisiting the popular Quake series.

The Quake series is a hugely influential name in gaming, known for changing the way first-person shooter games are made. It’s been a while since a brand new Quake game was released – the last was Quake Champions, alongside updated versions of classic titles – and fans are definitely ready for a new installment.

ID Software Rumoured to Return to Quake or Hexen

According to a recent Windows Central report detailing Xbox’s 2026 plans, Microsoft—which now owns the rights to both Quake and Hexen—may be considering a revival of one or both franchises. While an announcement could happen at the upcoming Quakecon event hosted by Bethesda, a major reveal is more likely to be saved for the Xbox Showcase. It’s important to remember that this is currently just speculation.

The most recent Quake game was Quake Champions, a free-to-play game released in 2022. Before that, the last major Hexen game, Hexen 2, came out in 1997. Recently at QuakeCon, updated versions of Heretic: Shadow of the Serpent Riders and Hexen: Beyond Heretic were released on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PC, and Switch. But it’s been almost thirty years since a completely new game in either series was released.
