If Its ‘Reveal’ is True, Injustice 3 Could Feature More Than One Superman

Currently, DC is experiencing an auspicious and opportune time. With notable successes like the Comic Commandos, Superman, and Peacemaker in the DC Universe (DCU), James Gunn and Peter Safran are leading the way to redemption for the DC brand, revitalizing its cinematic and theatrical presence which has often been overshadowed or criticized. Previously, DC movies and TV shows were met with similar derision as DC video games, and the introduction of the DCU into video game properties seemed a daring promise yet to be fully realized.

According to a rumor, if it’s true, the future of DC games could shine just as brightly as the DC Universe, given that renowned Superman voice actor George Newbern hinted he’s working on what seems to be “Injustice 3”. This unconfirmed information suggests that there may indeed be a new “Injustice” game in production and that the influence of the DCU and James Gunn on DC games has yet to fully manifest, or at least not clearly so.

It’s worth noting that the individual who made the claim about Newbern has since retracted their statement. Moreover, Phil LaMarr, known for his work in ‘Injustice 2’, is reported to have discussed potential involvement in ‘Injustice 3’. However, regardless of these reports, it’s advisable to approach such information with caution.

A Corenswet Superman Skin in Injustice 3 is a No-Brainer

It would be unlikely for David Corenswet to take on the role of Superman in all future DC game versions, even though there might be a focus on maintaining consistency within the DC Universe (DCU) in these games. However, such ambiguities often make it challenging to understand different character interpretations and continuities across various games, especially if Corenswet’s Superman is introduced through cosmetic changes rather than substantive narrative shifts.

Since then, Corenswet’s portrayal of Superman has been featured in both Fortnite and Injustice 2 Mobile. Notably, Injustice 2 Mobile partially incorporates this version of Superman into its Injustice series, giving him a slightly rebellious persona within the DC Universe.

From a die-hard fan’s perspective, it’s worth noting that as of now, in the realm of mainline, non-mobile DC games, there hasn’t been an appearance or reference to the DC Universe yet. However, with the universe still growing and plenty of backstory being established, the introduction of John Cena’s Peacemaker in Mortal Kombat 1 could serve as a tantalizing sneak peek into what we might expect from future DC games.

In other words, it’s likely that the upcoming Mortal Kombat game will feature another character from DC or DC Universe, given the strong connection between Mortal Kombat and DC at Warner Bros., as well as the previous games, Mortal Kombat 11 and Mortal Kombat 1, which have already introduced such characters. Also, it’s possible that NetherRealm Studios could incorporate a variety of DC characters in Injustice 3 if there is indeed a sequel to the game.

It’s almost certain that Newbern will appear in Injustice 3, given that Superman has been the main character throughout the series so far. Leaving him out of Injustice 3 would be as surprising as if Sub-Zero wasn’t included in Mortal Kombat 2, or whatever Mortal Kombat’s first sequel is called. It wouldn’t be unexpected for a Corenswet skin to be offered for Superman in Injustice 3, especially since the actor could provide his voice for the character.

The introduction of the DC Universe to video games has been a daring pledge, but it’s yet to reach its full potential.

Injustice 3 Could Be a Treasure Trove of DCU References for Years to Come

Given the current thriving state of DC, both in comics and the enthusiastic reception towards DC’s Absolute runs for Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman, particularly, it seems an opportune moment to release Injustice 3. The game might capitalize on this momentum, although it remains unclear how it plans to address the various endings of Injustice 2. With numerous DC Universe and DC Elseworlds projects underway, there’s an abundance of content and characters it could draw from to cash in on the DCU’s popularity. Some notable works that could be adapted include:

  • Creature Commandos, an animated DCU HBO Max series that began airing its first season on December 5, 2024.
  • Superman, a DCU movie that was released on July 11, 2025.
  • Peacemaker, an HBO Max DCU series that began airing its second season on August 21, 2025 (interestingly, only the second season of Peacemaker is canon to the DCU, having retroactively retconned significant events from the first season).
  • Lanterns, a DCU HBO series that is reportedly airing sometime in early 2026.
  • Supergirl, a DCU movie that is scheduled to be released on June 26, 2026.
  • Clayface, a DCU movie that is scheduled to be released on September 11, 2026.
  • The Batman: Part 2, a DC Elseworlds movie that is scheduled to be released on October 1, 2027.

The Penguin TV series on HBO’s DC Elseworlds is quite popular, but it’s not entirely plausible to expect Oswald Chesterfield Cobblepot or Colin Farrell’s Oz Cobb to join the Injustice roster without some truly innovative umbrella skills. Supergirl, however, seems like a perfect fit for a character skin given that the upcoming film focusing on Kara Zor-El, Kal-El’s cousin, is set to premiere next summer. Similarly, it’s possible that by the time the third Injustice game is released, NetherRealm might introduce a John Stewart skin for their Green Lantern character lineup, mirroring the appearance of Aaron Pierre from the Lanterns series.

It’s intriguing to consider if roles in the DC Universe (DCU) are designed to span across different media and feature consistent actor portrayals. This idea could be extended to voice acting for multiple characters within an hypothetical Injustice 3, with various voice actors representing different character skins. Additionally, given the potential longevity of an Injustice 3, NetherRealm might consistently incorporate elements from new DCU projects throughout the game. Eventually, they could even introduce a skin and possibly include Robert Pattinson’s voice talent from The Batman: Part 2.

It’s uncertain if Matt Reeves’ version of Batman will fit into Gunn’s larger DC Universe storyline, but that doesn’t rule out the possibility that he might appear as a character skin for Batman in Injustice 3. This could be a likely development, similar to how Superman is often included, as Batman and Superman are like Scorpion and Sub-Zero in NetherRealm’s Injustice series.
