As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I can confidently say that the idea of crossover fighters is always enticing, but the execution often leaves much to be desired – and that was certainly the case with PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale back in 2012. The roster was a dream come true for any PlayStation fan, boasting characters like Nathan Drake, Kratos, Raiden, Jak and Daxter, and even Sackboy, but it ultimately fell short due to a lack of content, a disappointing story mode, a small roster, and an overly restrictive KO system.

Crossover fighters always sound awesome on paper. The concept of throwing a bunch of beloved characters into an arena and letting them duke it out appeals to the base desires of many gamers, with it hearkening back to heated schoolyard conversations about which superhero could defeat who in a fight. But while the concept is foolproof, many crossover fighters can stumble into issues when it comes to executing on that vision, and that was the case with PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale.

Although boasting characters like Nathan Drake, Kratos, Raiden, Jak and Daxter, and Sackboy, PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale fell short of expectations upon its 2012 debut. Lacking content, a subpar story mode, a limited roster, and a controversial KO system that relied solely on super moves, the game received criticism at launch. However, given the current trend towards live-service games, a new edition of PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale could thrive, especially with an expanded lineup of fresh PlayStation characters to choose from. The army of Astro Bots returned in “The Playroom VR” of 2016 to exhibit the prowess of PlayStation VR technology once more.

Astro Bot initially gained significant recognition in 2018 with the release of “Astro Bot Rescue Mission,” an exclusive title for PSVR that garnered high praise from critics. However, due to the relatively small user base of the PSVR, many players may not have discovered Astro Bot until 2020 and its inclusion in “Astro’s Playroom,” a free platformer game bundled with the PlayStation 5. This title quickly became a favorite among PS5 users, thanks to its precision platforming mechanics, fan-service elements, and clever use of the DualSense controller’s unique features.

2024 marked the well-deserved victory for Astro Bot (by Team Asobi). Released in September, this game garnered widespread praise, and its recent Game of the Year title at the 2024 Game Awards has solidified Astro Bot as one of PlayStation’s emerging iconic characters.

If a new game called “PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale 2” were to come out soon, it’s highly likely that Astro Bot would be included among the characters. Despite his adorable look, some fans may question Astro Bot’s fighting skills, but looks can often be misleading.

In Astro Bot, players encounter numerous power-ups throughout gameplay, which, theoretically, could serve as attack moves in a potential PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale 2. For instance, Astro’s Twin-Frog Gloves would allow him to punch enemies from a distance, while his Barkster the Bulldog jetpack lets him soar across the battlefield. The Monkey Climber power-up could be used to snatch items or toss foes around, and the Elephant Hose-Nose ability enables Astro to vacuum up adversaries and launch them out of the arena.
