It appears that Atlus may be in the process of creating a remake for the highly praised 2008 JRPG, Persona 4, originally released on PS2. Whispers about this updated game have been around for some time, but more chatter about its release has picked up recently. In March, fans noticed that Atlus had registered a domain for a website titled “p4re.jp,” reminiscent of the “p3re.jp” domain used for 2024’s Persona 3 Reload. Given that Atlus typically registers domains for games shortly before their announcements, some believe this could mean that an announcement for a new version of Persona 4 is just around the corner.
It seems that the speculation surrounding a potential remake of “Persona 4” has grown even hotter, fueled by comments made by some members of its English voice cast. Last week, Yuri Lowenthal, who voiced Yosuke Hanamura, hinted on Bluesky that he wouldn’t be reprising his role in the remake, despite expressing a strong desire to do so. However, Atlus apparently asked him not to disclose this information, and Lowenthal subsequently deleted his post. Remarkably, other actors who worked on the original “Persona 4” have made similar remarks, fanning the flames of anticipation for a possible remake.
The Original English Voice Cast of Persona 4 May Not Return at All in Its Rumored Remake
Several English VAs Have Said that They’re Not Going to Reprise their Roles in the Persona 4 Remake
Erin Fitzgerald and Amanda Winn Lee, who were the voice actors for Chie Satonaka and Yukiko Amagi in English, each shared on social media within the past few days that they were not asked to reprise their roles in the remake of Persona 4. In contrast to Yuri Lowenthal, neither of them removed their posts. This revelation has left many fans feeling disheartened since these actors are widely praised for their portrayals of these characters in earlier Persona titles.
Erin Fitzgerald took over as the voice actress for the character Chie Satonaka starting from the game “Persona 4 Arena”, while Tracy Rooney voiced Chie in the original “Persona 4” game on PlayStation 2.
Although Persona 3 Reload Had a New English Dub, It Recast Some of the OG Voice Actors in New Roles
It appears that if the rumored Persona 4 remake isn’t part of a clever marketing strategy, it might deviate from the pattern set by Persona 3 Reload. In other words, it seems unlikely that the English voice actors in new roles will follow the trend established in Persona 3 Reload, which was a remake of the 2006’s Persona 3. This remake included an entirely new English dub, with all lines in both the English and Japanese versions being re-recorded. However, unlike the original Japanese voice cast that remained consistent, the English voice actors for the main characters in the game were all replaced during this remake.
Despite the change, some of the original voice actors reappeared in the remake but took on new roles. For instance, Grant George, known for his role as Shinjiro Aragaki in Persona 3, returned to play Takeharu Kirijo in Persona 3 Reload. Similarly, Yuri Lowenthal, who was Makoto Yuki in the original game, made a guest appearance as Eiichiro Takeba’s voice actor in Reload. Interestingly, Tara Platt, who played Elizabeth in the Persona 3 games, is the only member of the original English voice cast to reprise her character, Elizabeth, in Persona 3 Reload.
Persona 4’s English Voice Cast is Too Good to be Thrown Away
It’s worth mentioning that none of the original Persona 4 voice actors have publicly committed to being part of the remake. In Yuri Lowenthal’s case, his statement “they don’t want me to come back” seems to imply he won’t be returning, although this isn’t definitive. Given the affection fans have for the original Persona 4 English voice cast, it would be delightful if Atlus considered them for roles in the rumored remake, but as time passes, the likelihood of that happening appears to be decreasing.
