The Pikachu with Grey Felt Hat Pokemon trading card, a highly prized collectible, is currently selling for around $1,000 in perfect condition (grade 10). This rare card was first given out at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam in 2023 and immediately became popular with both collectors and those looking to resell it for a profit.
The Pikachu card featuring a grey felt hat is the 85th special promo card released with the Pokemon TCG‘s Scarlet and Violet series. It’s based on Vincent van Gogh’s 1887 self-portrait of the same name. This card was created through a partnership between Pokemon and the Van Gogh Museum, and was part of a collection of merchandise showcasing Pokemon artwork inspired by Van Gogh’s paintings. Originally given as a prize to people who visited the exhibition, the card became highly sought after by collectors and was quickly resold at inflated prices. The situation was complicated when four Van Gogh Museum employees were reportedly fired for attempting to steal a box of these Pikachu cards meant for the exhibition.
Infamous Pikachu With Grey Felt Hat Card Going for Over $1,000 on eBay
The Pikachu card featuring a grey felt hat, originally released as part of the Pokemon TCG’s Van Gogh collection, is now extremely rare. While the Pokemon Center briefly re-released the collection, the card is completely out of print. As a result, prices have increased dramatically. Currently, a near-mint condition (grade 9) card sells for around $650 on TCGPlayer, before shipping costs. This is a significant increase from its price of $124 to $160 in October 2024. A perfect condition (grade 10) card is even more expensive, with listings on eBay exceeding $1,000. With very few available, prices for this rare promo card are expected to continue to rise.

To fight back against people who buy products just to resell them at a higher price, stores like Walmart are requiring a subscription for certain popular items, like the new *Pokemon TCG* releases. For example, Walmart+ members got first access to the *Pokemon TCG* Phantasmal Flames Elite Trainer Box. Walmart+ costs $12.95 a month or $98 a year, and they plan to continue offering early access to *Pokemon TCG* products this way.

Although some rare Pokémon trading cards have sold for even more money, people are still actively reselling cards for profit. It remains to be seen how The Pokémon Company will address the issue of scalpers and protect collectors.
