Over the past few years, *The Legend of Zelda* has become a consistently released series for Nintendo. While they haven’t released a major *Zelda* game every single year, they’ve regularly filled the gaps with spin-off titles, developed either internally or with help from other studios. This year, Nintendo is working with Koei Tecmo and their AAA Game Studio to launch *Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment*, a new installment in the *Hyrule Warriors* series. This game takes place during the events of *The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom*. Though it looks promising, it won’t offer the classic *Zelda* gameplay that some fans might expect, as it’s designed as a spin-off title.
Nintendo has been open about games like *Hyrule Warriors* and the upcoming *Zelda* movie, but they haven’t said much about the next major *Zelda* game. Given that *Tears of the Kingdom* was released only two years ago, and it took a long time to develop, it’s unlikely we’ll see a new mainline *Zelda* game for at least three years. While *Zelda* fans wait for the next installment, there are other games to enjoy, including a recently announced indie title inspired by the *Zelda* series.
Zelda Fans Should Keep an Eye on Demi and the Fractured Dream
I was so excited to watch Annapurna Interactive’s livestream at Tokyo Game Show! They revealed three new games, and one that really caught my eye was from a brand new studio called Yarn Owl. Their first game, Demi and the Fractured Dream, looks amazing! It’s a third-person action-adventure game coming to pretty much all consoles – including the Nintendo Switch 2 and regular Switch – in 2026. Even though they only showed a short clip, it’s clear the game is heavily inspired by the Zelda series, both in how it plays and how it looks.
During the Annapurna Interactive livestream, Iridium Studios showcased People of Note, a turn-based RPG with a musical focus, and Marumittu Games presented D-Topia, a puzzle adventure game.
Demi and the Fractured Dream Has a Unique Dodging Mechanic
In *Demi and the Fractured Dream*, you play as Demi, a character with the unique ability to harness the power of the Void. As a ‘Voidsent,’ Demi grows stronger by skillfully dodging enemy attacks, which then boosts the power of their next attacks. Throughout the game, players can unlock new abilities and charms to further enhance Demi’s strength.
The Gameplay in Demi and the Fractured Dream Takes a Lot of Inspiration from Classic Zelda Titles
The story of *Demi and the Fractured Dream* is straightforward, similar to many *Zelda* games: Demi must journey across different kingdoms and defeat three powerful beasts to save the world of Somnus from a mysterious awakening. The game itself feels like a classic 3D *Zelda* title, with players exploring a variety of dungeons to advance. These dungeons are packed with puzzles, challenging enemies, and platforming challenges.
Instead of copying recent *Zelda* games like *Breath of the Wild* and *Tears of the Kingdom*, *Demi and the Fractured Dream* takes its cues from older titles such as *Twilight Princess* and *The Wind Waker*. The *Zelda* series has shifted away from the classic dungeon-focused gameplay of its earlier games, embracing a more open-world style. This new game might appeal to longtime *Zelda* fans who miss the traditional format and are looking for a more familiar experience.
