I'm Excited For Smile 2 But It Must Do This One Thing To Succeed

As a seasoned horror enthusiast with over two decades of spine-tingling experiences under my belt, I can confidently say that Smile 2 has some big shoes to fill following the chilling success of its predecessor. With its eerie premise and captivating cast, it’s safe to assume that this sequel will send a shiver down my spine and leave me sleepless nights in anticipation.

For years, I’ve been a dedicated fan of the horror genre, and I must say, the 2022 movie “Smile” left a deeper impact on me compared to many recent releases. Written and directed by Parker Finn, who also drew inspiration from his short film “Laura Hasn’t Slept,” this chilling tale follows Dr. Rose Cotter (Sosie Bacon) as she grapples with an entity that forces her to display horrifying grins. The movie’s compelling supernatural narrative, well-crafted characters, and authentic fright moments are the reasons why a sequel, “Smile 2,” was quickly given the green light.

Fans of horror movies like myself are eagerly anticipating that _Smile 2_ will live up to the brilliance of its predecessor, and after seeing the entertaining and spooky trailer, I am confident it will. Nevertheless, here are some ideas on how _Smile 2_ could achieve similar success as Finn’s remarkable first film:

What Does Smile 2 Need To Do To Be As Impressive As The Original?

In the second installment of “Smile,” I envision an unsettling and enigmatic climax that not only paves the way for a third film but also underscores the persistent nature of the curse. The demon in the original “Smile” has a chilling effect on viewers, leaving them disturbed, and I believe this will continue in the sequel. Although it’s rare for horror sequels to have a positive ending, I feel it’s crucial that the final moments are both terrifying and heart-wrenching.

In “Smile 2,” Naomi Scott plays Skye Riley, a singer caught up in a relentless curse. Contrary to popular belief, neither “Scream 7” nor “Smile 2” need a multitude of deaths to be engaging. The narrative revolves around the impact of this curse on one individual, which should remain consistent. Although it might be disappointing for viewers to develop affection for Skye only to see her perish in the end, it wouldn’t align with the story if she managed to escape the curse unscathed.

At minimum, the conclusion should depict Skye transferring the curse to another individual. This new character could potentially serve as the protagonist for a future film instalment, given that the series might benefit from further exploration. As the sequel deviates by presenting a chilling narrative revolving around a popular musician, who is not conventionally associated with horror, it would be intriguing to see the franchise continue in this manner.

During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter in December 2022, Parker Finn discussed the reasons behind penning a bleak finale for the movie “Smile”.

Since the initial stages of writing the screenplay, I’ve been strongly inclined towards letting the movie reach its most logical yet grim end. This approach seemed fitting for the narrative I wanted to convey, and I hoped it would seem justified in the viewers’ eyes.

Finn continued:

I aimed to execute a scene that the audience might not prefer, yet it was crucial for me to achieve an emotional release prior to taking a bleak turn. In essence, I wished to have the best of both worlds – to present the undesired event while still experiencing the catharsis.

In contrast to some horror films resembling “Smile”, it would have seemed peculiar if Rose had continued her life unscathed after the harrowing events. Similarly, assuming that Skye’s story in “Smile 2” follows suit, it seems reasonable to assume she will face similar challenges. I am eagerly anticipating exploring more about Skye and witnessing her touring experiences, as well as how she copes with unsettling grins wherever she goes. Horror movies usually steer clear of themes like celebrity and stardom (except for the awkward “Scream 3”, which isn’t highly regarded), but I find it intriguing to envision Skye as a pop singer.

What Is Known About Smile 2?

Enthusiasts of horror films should be aware of the cast for the upcoming film “Smile 2“, which includes several familiar faces. The film stars Naomi Scott as the lead character Skye Riley, alongside Lukas Gage, Rosemarie Dewitt, Ray Nicholson, Dylan Gelula, Miles Gutierrez-Riley, Raúl Castillo, Peter Jacobson, and Kyle Gallner. Fans will recall Gallner, who portrayed police officer Joel in “Smile“. Given that Joel is under a curse from the enigmatic and terrifying entity, he serves as an intriguing link between the original horror movie and the sequel. It will certainly be engaging to observe how Joel interacts with Skye. Drew Barrymore also makes an appearance in Smile 2, as Skye appears on her talk show. It promises to be exciting to witness how “Smile 2 ” can reuse the same demon as the initial movie and place a new character in a tense and emotional predicament.

Smile 2 will be released on October 18th, 2024, which is perfect since it’s just in time for Halloween. I’m sure I’m not the only one who makes a list of slasher movies to watch each October and looks forward to the cozy yet creepy vibes. I’m certain Smile 2 will live up to the promise of the genuinely haunting original.
