I’m Glad Grand Theft Auto 6 Didn’t Release This Year, Because 2025 Was An Amazing Year for Games

The announcement that Grand Theft Auto 6 is now scheduled for November 2026 didn’t come as a huge shock to most fans, though it was still a letdown. It’s amusing to remember that the game was originally expected this fall, and many players were anticipating its release or already deeply immersed in the gameplay. While I’m excited for Grand Theft Auto 6 just like everyone else, I actually think it’s a good thing it’s been delayed until next year.

2025 was an amazing year for video games. There were so many excellent games released, offering a huge range of experiences. From big-budget, ambitious titles to smaller games that prove surprisingly deep and engaging, there was something for everyone.

The RPG Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is gaining a lot of attention after winning big at the Joystick Awards. It’s expected to be a strong contender for other gaming awards throughout the season, including those from major gaming publications and at The Game Awards next month. Clair Obscur offers a genuinely unique experience, and like many other great games this year, it’s been consistently successful. However, it’s fair to wonder if it would still be getting this much buzz if Grand Theft Auto 6 had already been released – that game is so huge it would likely overshadow everything else.

There were so many great video games released in 2025, it’s hard to even highlight them all! We saw highly anticipated sequels like Death Stranding 2 and Ghost of Yotei on PlayStation, both of which were very well-received. Indie developers also delivered with impressive follow-ups like Hades 2 and Hollow Knight: Silksong, proving they can continue to innovate. Dispatch carried on the legacy of Telltale Games with a fantastic cast and performances. Puzzle fans were captivated by Blue Prince, and I’ve been completely hooked on Ball x Pit since its release – it looks simple, but it’s incredibly addictive.

In 2025, Nintendo released its new console, the Switch 2, along with two impressive, unique games made specifically for it. The Switch 2 was a major event and likely captured the most attention, but other games still managed to stand out, including ARC Raiders, Split Fiction, and Battlefield 6.

2025 isn’t necessarily a better year for games, but it feels different because there’s no clear frontrunner. While Clair Obscur is expected to do well at awards, any of the Game of the Year nominees could realistically win. Usually, there are a few games that feel like obvious choices, but this year, all the nominees seem equally deserving.

2025 has been an amazing year for games. There are so many critically acclaimed titles – games with a Metacritic score of 85 or higher – that you could play them all the way up until the release of Grand Theft Auto 6 in November!

Honestly, that list doesn’t even scratch the surface of how many amazing games are out there! It completely ignores all the fantastic downloadable content that came out for those titles, plus everything releasing this year and next. And let’s not forget games like Indiana Jones and the Great Circle finally hitting new platforms, or those upgraded versions for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. It’s a ridiculously good problem to have – too many great games and not enough time to play them all!

A lot of people assume that most games released before the original Grand Theft Auto 6 release date would have already found their players. However, I’m not convinced. Consider this: games like Clair Obscur, Doom, or Ghost of Yotei – or any game released beforehand – could gain traction during a sale like Black Friday, especially without GTA 6 competing for attention. Many gamers only purchase one or two games per year, and Grand Theft Auto 6 would almost certainly have been one of them.

Most gamers prefer to find one game they really love and spend a lot of time playing it. If you’ve played over ten games from the list, you’re unusual and actively seek out quality titles. For the majority, though, a single, immersive game like Grand Theft Auto 6 would be enough.

Maybe all I’m saying is, we should all play more games! But I expect Grand Theft Auto 6 will be such a huge topic next year that it will overshadow many other great titles. It’s still early, and we don’t have to worry about the game being delayed, but publishers will likely try to release their games either before GTA 6 comes out, or well after – probably in 2027. However, if GTA 5 is anything to go by, Grand Theft Auto 6 will remain incredibly popular for years, not just a few months.

I recommend exploring the exciting games coming in 2025 to get a feel for what’s available. That way, you can start planning and saving up for their release next November!
