I had mixed feelings about the build-up to Pokemon Legends: Z-A. I was thrilled by the promise of new Mega Evolutions, but concerned about how difficult it might be to get them. I was especially excited when the new Megas for the Kalos starters were revealed – it was exactly what I’d hoped for! However, like many other fans, I worried that requiring players to participate in Pokemon Legends: Z-A‘s online ranked battles to unlock the Mega Stones would make those powerful forms too hard to achieve.
I’ve spent a lot of time playing competitive games like *Pokemon* and *Splatoon 3*, so I understand how challenging it can be to climb the ranks. Before *Pokemon Legends: Z-A* came out, I was worried it would take a huge amount of effort to unlock Mega Greninja before the season ended. Thankfully, that wasn’t the case! Earning Mega Greninja through the game’s online battles was much easier than I expected, and I’m really happy about that.
I Was Worried Mega Greninja Would Be A Tough Grind, But It’s Surprisingly Easy to Get
I got to try out the new battle system in Pokemon Legends: Z-A by playing ranked battles. After meeting Mable, you can access the Z-A Battle Club through the Link Play menu. This allowed me to quickly start battling and earning points to climb the ranks and unlock Mega Greninja. Even though my Pokemon were still quite weak, I was surprised by how many chances there were to earn points and improve my rank.

How to Earn Mega Greninja from Ranked Battles in Pokemon Legends: Z-A
- Reach rank K in the Z-A Battle Club before Season 1 ends
- Rank up by earning points
- Ranks do not decay once achieved
If you’re aiming to get Mega Greninja in *Pokemon Legends: Z-A*, you’ll need to reach rank K in the online battle circuit, starting from rank Z. That was my original plan, but I’m now thinking I can go even further because earning points to climb the ranks seems pretty easy. You don’t just get points for winning battles; you also earn them for other things you do during a battle, such as:
- Deal the first attack
- Deal the last attack
- Be the first to Mega Evolve
- Be the first to claim an item
- Defeat a Pokemon of each opponent
- Use supereffective moves 5 or more times
- Defeat a Mega-Evolved Pokemon
- Land the most attacks in battle
- Attack the most full-health Pokemon
- Defeat an opponent with a Mega-Evolved Pokemon
- Have no Pokemon faint in battle
- Earn points for each KO earned in battle

Winning a match gives you 30 points, and finishing second earns 10, but you can still score a lot even if you don’t come in first or second. Even though I wasn’t very good, I still earned points by grabbing an item before anyone else and landing a powerful move five times. It looks like most players will only need to play around 10 ranked battles to reach rank K and unlock Mega Greninja, considering points from both placement and in-battle achievements.
The first season of the Z-A Battle Club takes place from October 17th to November 6th. To earn a Greninjite, players need to achieve rank K during this period.
Pokemon Legends: Z-A’s Ranked Battle System Eases My Biggest Fear About Online Matches

I was worried about losing rank while trying to get Mega Greninja in *Pokemon Legends: Z-A*. It’s frustrating to work hard in ranked modes only to fall back down due to losses. Thankfully, *Pokemon Legends: Z-A* prevents you from dropping rank once you reach a certain level, so I didn’t have to worry about a losing streak ruining my progress. It was a huge relief!

I Don’t Mind Having Rewards Tied to Battle Rank After Claiming Greninjite
I’m okay with some rewards being tied to online battles, especially since losing rank after a tough match isn’t a concern. While it’s understandable that needing a Nintendo Switch Online subscription to access the Battle Club is frustrating, earning ranks each season shouldn’t be too difficult for most *Pokémon* players.
