Microsoft has revealed its next Xbox console, currently known as Project Helix. Details are still limited, but it’s confirmed the console will be able to play PC games and likely access stores like Steam and the Epic Games Store. Sony hasn’t said much about the PlayStation 6, but given how well the PS5 has sold, a new PlayStation console is expected in the future.
It’s been nearly six years since the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S were released, and people are starting to wonder when the next consoles will come out. Historically, console generations last between four and seven years, leading many to predict new systems in 2027. While that timing usually wouldn’t be a concern, I believe that seven years is too soon to release new PlayStation and Xbox consoles.
The PS5 and Xbox Series X/S Had a Very Slow Start
The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X launched during the COVID-19 pandemic, which created major problems with manufacturing and shipping. This, along with people buying consoles just to resell them at inflated prices, made it feel like the new generation of gaming was significantly delayed. While the consoles were technically available, it took many months, and even years, before they were consistently in stock and developers could consistently release games that truly showcased their advanced capabilities.

For several years after the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S launched, most games were released on both the new consoles and older ones. Even now, some games still support older systems – for example, Call of Duty hasn’t fully transitioned to the new generation. Considering the consoles are almost six years old and we still haven’t seen a Call of Duty game built specifically for them, it might not be wise to rush into buying even more powerful hardware that could also take years to be fully utilized.
GTA 6 is Going to Give This Generation a Shot in the Arm
After a 13-year wait, Grand Theft Auto 6 is scheduled to release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S on November 19, assuming there are no further delays. GTA 6 is expected to be a major driver of console sales for both Sony and Microsoft. Because the game won’t be available on PC at launch, players will need to purchase a PS5 or Xbox Series X/S to play it when it first comes out.
The release of Grand Theft Auto 6 is expected to significantly increase sales of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, encouraging many gamers to upgrade to the newest consoles. It could also drive demand for a potential PS5 Pro from existing PS5 owners. Just like Pokémon revitalized and extended the lifespan of the Game Boy, GTA 6 is likely to have a similar, substantial impact on console sales.
It’s smarter to focus on attracting the growing number of players we already have, rather than prioritizing expensive new hardware. Unfortunately, it looks like we’ll be doing both, which is really annoying. This means we’ll get a few cutting-edge games, but a lot of games that work on both old and new consoles. This will hold back the progress of the new consoles, similar to what happened with the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
The World is on Fire
Remember Jaden Smith’s question about what’s going on in the world? Things are tough financially right now. Gas is expensive, and everyday costs haven’t gone back to normal since the pandemic. Many people are struggling to make ends meet, and that makes the idea of buying expensive new gaming consoles like the next Xbox or PlayStation 6 seem unrealistic. We don’t know how much they’ll cost, but given current prices, they could easily be between $800 and $1,000.
The seventh generation of game consoles lasted longer than usual, largely due to the economic downturn of 2008. Given that the next generation of consoles are expected to be very expensive, it makes sense if they also have a longer lifespan, similar to what happened before.
Nintendo often takes its time between console releases. There was a five-year gap between the GameCube and Wii, six years between the Wii and Wii U, five years between the Wii U and Switch, and now it’s been eight years since the Switch first launched, leading up to the Switch 2.
Let’s look at PlayStation and Xbox release cycles. The original PlayStation came out in 1995, followed by the PlayStation 2 in 2000. The gap between the PS2 and PS3 was six years, and then seven years passed before the PS4 arrived. Xbox had a faster pace initially – only four years between the first Xbox and the Xbox 360 – but then an eight-year wait for the Xbox One. Both the PS4 and Xbox One lasted about seven years before the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S were released. While sticking to this roughly seven-to-eight-year pattern might suggest a 2027 release for the next consoles, it doesn’t feel essential.
When Should the PS6 and Project Helix Release?
I believe the PlayStation 6 and the next Xbox (currently known as Project Helix) won’t likely arrive until at least 2028. Honestly, I wouldn’t mind seeing them delayed even further, to 2030, which would give us ten years of the current PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S consoles. The latest generation feels like it hasn’t fully realized its potential. As of now, the PS5 has only released nine games that are exclusive to the console. The Xbox Series X hasn’t had any console exclusives, as all its games are also available on PC, and even beyond that, it doesn’t have many console-specific titles.
I’d rather the next generation of consoles didn’t come out for a few more years, but it’s starting to look like Xbox’s Project Helix will be released in 2027. The PlayStation 6 could also launch in 2027, or possibly 2028 – similar to how the PS3 came out a year after the Xbox 360. Either way, if the new consoles are aiming for a 2027 release, we should expect to learn more about them in the next twelve months.
