Recently, images from a canceled multiplayer game in the God of War series have appeared online. The game, originally being developed by Bluepoint Games, would have likely taken place in ancient Greece, judging by the screenshots that have been released.
Earlier this year, Sony reportedly stopped development on two online games. One was a military shooter set in an open world, created by Bend Studio. The other was a multiplayer game based on the God of War series, being made by Bluepoint Games, the team behind the Demon’s Souls remake.
Canceled God of War Multiplayer Game Would Have Been Set in Ancient Greece
Recently revealed images shared with MP1ST offer a glimpse into the canceled God of War live service game. The 23 screenshots suggest the game might have brought the series back to its Greek roots, featuring temples and artifacts inspired by Greek mythology. The images depict expansive environments – including detailed temple interiors, sulfur caves, and large pools – hinting at a design geared towards multiplayer gameplay.
A standout location, called “Hades’ Armory” by MP1ST, was featured in the canceled game. Though it’s unclear if Hades himself would have appeared, the location seemed significant, appearing in two versions: a normal state and a “cursed” state covered in red corrosion, possibly hinting at a gameplay feature. Sadly, because the multiplayer God of War project was canceled, fans can only guess at what might have been.
Even though one God of War project was cancelled, it looks like several others are still in the works. For instance, recent reports suggest a new 2.5D action-adventure game in the style of Metroidvania, possibly releasing in 2026, could star Kratos’ brother, Deimos.
Gamers are understandably excited to find out what’s next for the God of War series. Recent buzz suggests the next main game could take place in Egypt – a setting fans have wanted for a long time. In fact, the developers at Santa Monica Studio previously considered an Egyptian setting, which adds weight to these rumors. One report claims Kratos will use a curved Egyptian sword, possibly similar to a scimitar or kopesh. However, it’s important to remember that none of this has been officially confirmed, so it’s best to view it as speculation for now.
