Images From Respawn & Bit Reactor’s Star Wars Turn-Based Tactics Game Have Leaked

Prior to the official reveal of the upcoming Star Wars game at the Star Wars Celebration in April, pictures of the turn-based tactics game developed by Respawn Entertainment and Bit Reactor have surfaced online. The resemblance to the strategy game XCOM is quite noticeable, which isn’t surprising considering the number of XCOM alumni at Bit Reactor.

Bit Reactor and Respawn Are Working on a Game That Looks Like XCOM but Star Wars

Initially, gaming news platform MP1st unearthed these images. They stumbled upon them in an art portfolio belonging to a creator using Bit Reactor. The footage suggests that the game was presumably developed around mid-2023, during which time it was known internally as Bruno.

The images reveal gameplay that strongly resembles the tactical, turn-based team combat style popularized by games like XCOM: Enemy Unknown and XCOM 2 during the 2010s. In such games, players command a group of characters in a sequence of turns, with each character having a limited number of actions they can perform. Notably, even the famous Mario series has ventured into the turn-based tactics genre, as demonstrated by Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle and Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope.

As a passionate fan, I’m thrilled to share my perspective on this gameplay footage. In these scenes, I find myself assuming the role of a Mandalorian character, engaging in combat with a Republic clone trooper. A handy 95% hit chance indicator hovers above my foe, adding a strategic layer to the encounter. Below, on the screen’s edge, various combat options present themselves – among them, the deployment of a thermal detonator, Star Wars’ equivalent of a potent grenade.

Another snapshot reveals the use of an XCOM-inspired overwatch ability. Upon activating this feature during my turn, I patiently wait for an enemy to step into my line of sight and, without missing a beat, they automatically take fire. An animated sequence also showcases a temporary headquarters, where I can interact with facilities such as the Armory, Holotable, Special Ops, or Black Market.

Respawn and Bit Reactor have teamed up for a collaboration on a Star Wars tactical game. Earlier, the creators behind the highly praised Jedi series were developing a Star Wars shooter centered around a Mandalorian bounty hunter; however, this project was halted in February 2024.
