Images of Blizzard’s Cancelled Survival Game ‘Odyssey’ Leak Online

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I must say that Project Odyssey looked like it could have been a gem in the survival genre. The customization options, cartoony aesthetic, and apparent PvP elements all point to a unique blend of gameplay mechanics that would have set it apart from other titles.

2023 saw talks emerging about a new survival game in development by Blizzard. Previously, it had been suggested that this game bore resemblance to Everwild, drew inspiration from Fable Legends, and was envisioned as a ‘tale of survival set in a fairy tale world’.

By January 2024, unfortunately, the production of Odyssey came to a halt due to unresolvable problems with the game engine they’ve been working on since 2017. They declared these issues as being too challenging to overcome.

Now, images of the beleaguered, forgotten project have reportedly surfaced online.

The Best We’ll Get

On the Russian social networking platform VK.com, a user posted a sequence of pictures, asserting that they originated from Project Odyssey – a survival game reportedly abandoned by Blizzard Entertainment.

In the images presented, a game that resembles a typical survival genre is depicted, often referred to as a ‘standard’ survival game. The player is equipped with various tools and weapons, has the ability to organize an inventory filled with resources and other items, and on a ‘character status’ screen, we notice indicators such as warmth, boosts and penalties, food, and sleep levels.

As a gamer, I’d say it seems like Project Odyssey would have offered a lot of personalization. You could start by customizing your character base model, then move on to choosing their outfit, loadout, and even distributing skill points and levels. The game seemed to sport a ‘toonish’ style reminiscent of Palworld, and from what I can tell from the UI, it would have allowed players to wield various powers and abilities.

The screenshots show signs of what appears to be a ‘kill feed’, implying that Odyssey might have incorporated Player versus Player (PvP) aspects. In one photo, it’s clear that a player has been killed by another user, and they are offered the chance to select their respawn location. This includes an option that is as distant as ‘822 steps away’, hinting at a relatively large game map.

Additionally, as they progressed, they not only shed any items they were carrying but also experienced a reduction in the durability of their equipment – a common feature in survival-themed MMOs (Massively Multiplayer Online Games).

Unfortunately, these leaked images are the closest we’ll ever get to Odyssey.

Do you think this would have been a good game?
