This article contains spoilers from One Piece’s Elbaf arc.
Summary
- Big Mom can give and take life, while Imu can give and take immortality.
- Imu’s powers might be linked to the Leviathan, representing death and consuming souls.
- Imu controls the Abyss and death contracts, marking Elders and Holy Knights as their slaves.
The “Egghead” storyline in “One Piece” ultimately unveiled the remarkable talents of both the Five Elders and Imu to viewers. However, it’s clear that fans are more intrigued by Imu’s powers and identity compared to anything else. During Sabo’s flashback, Oda provided a glimpse into the abilities of the Five Elders, and simultaneously hinted at the power of Imu.
Although the Five Elders unveiled their full powers during the Egghead storyline, it’s still uncertain what abilities Imu possesses. However, Oda may have hinted at these powers in a subtle manner, although most readers might not have noticed yet.
Imu’s Devil Fruit Ability Parallels Big Mom
- Big Mom Can Give And Take Life
- Imu Can Give And Take Immortality
It’s not immediately apparent to fans, but Imu and Big Mom share several striking similarities. For instance, they both possess abilities that carry a common theme. Big Mom’s power, “Mother’s Flame,” mirrors Imu’s use of Mother Flame. While Big Mom aspires to unite everyone someday and sit at the same table, Imu is the polar opposite, dominating over others in the world of One Piece. In Wano, Big Mom attempted to recruit the Lunarian King, whereas Imu ousted the Lunarians above the Red Line. Just like how Big Mom always carries a picture of Carmel with her, Imu keeps an image of Lily close by, much alike. Unlike Big Mom who accidentally consumed Mother Carmel, Imu demonstrates the ability to consume even fire.
Roger, what exactly is that? I’m guessing we have something similar in our land as well, don’t we? – Big Mom, referring to One Piece.
Big Mom not only wedded men and bore children with them to expand her family and amass power, whereas it appears that Imu was unable to be with his desired person, possibly Lily. In many aspects, Imu and Big Mom seem to be mirror images of each other, but this is most evident in their abilities.
Big Mom possesses the abilities of the “Soru Soru no Mi,” which grants her the liberty to control and transfer souls. This includes not just people, but also animals and objects, effectively turning them into her subordinates. She has the unique capability to imbue souls, be it her own or others, into various beings, regardless of whether they are human or not.
If Imu’s powers are reversed compared to what we know, it’s plausible that Imu has the ability to transfer these powers onto others, which could account for the Elders and Holy Knights having everlasting life and special abilities like Gunko’s Aro Aro no Mi. Essentially, Imu can imbue others with demonic beast-like powers and even grant them immortality, as depicted in the story. However, the process behind this is straightforward. Much like Big Mom requires a soul to reside in Totto Land, Imu requires death from an individual to acquire immense power. By offering their death to Imu, they gain eternal life, but they can be terminated by Imu at any moment.
Imu Has The Power Of The Leviathan
The Best That Represents Death And Consumes Souls
Considering everything we’ve gone over so far, fans agree that there is only one apt power for Imu: the capacity to bestow or strip others of life, as well as conferring demonic powers upon others. This power aligns perfectly with the concept known as Leviathan – a monstrous, demonic sea serpent notorious for its insatiable hunger. Given Imu’s appearance and abilities, the Leviathan seems an ideal match. The fire that Sabo threw at them was effortlessly consumed by Imu, suggesting that this could very well be a manifestation of the Leviathan’s power.

Imu Can Take In Souls Of The People
The legendary sea monster named Leviathan is infamous for snatching people’s souls too. Interestingly, in religious texts like the Bible, the gaping maw of damnation is referred to as the Abyss. It is into this Abyss that the souls of the wicked are cast. Remarkably, this maw of hell is also associated with the Leviathan.
Readers understand that in the story of One Piece, it’s common knowledge that Imu governs the Abyss. This Abyss serves as a symbol of Imu’s Devil Fruit power, used jointly by Imu, the Elders, and the Holy Knights. To put it another way, the Abyss signifies Imu’s ability to manipulate life and death, and the Leviathan functions as a conduit for souls. Contrastingly, Big Mom’s power operates on the principle that instead of bestowing life, a person offers their demise, resulting in eternal life.
Individuals who agree to the death pact with Imu receive a distinctive symbol, which grants them exclusive access to the Abyss, as explained by Killingham during the Elbaf arc in One Piece. This emblem mirrors the brand of a Celestial Dragon’s hoof that they use on their slaves. Essentially, the Five Elders and the Holy Knights, despite being Celestial Dragons themselves, are effectively bound servants to Imu.
