Rock band Tool has unexpectedly allowed one of their songs to be used in Warlock, a new role-playing game created by Wizards of the Coast and Invoke Studios. The game, revealed at The Game Awards, is based on Dungeons & Dragons and promises a dark and magical experience, a mood enhanced by Tool’s music in the announcement trailer.
Tool is known for being very careful about allowing their music to be used in films and TV shows. While frontman Maynard James Keenan’s other bands, A Perfect Circle and Puscifer, have appeared in many projects, Tool rarely licenses its songs. The band carefully considers whether a project is a good fit, so Wizards of the Coast likely appreciates Tool agreeing to feature one of their popular songs in the announcement for Warlock.

What Tool Song Was Used in the Trailer?
- “Forty Six & 2”
The trailer for Warlock begins with a sweeping shot of a tower nestled in the mountains, perfectly timed with the opening notes of Tool’s “Forty Six & 2.” This instantly grabs your attention and sets a dramatic tone. We then see evocative imagery – smoke-filled castle rooms, a single eye on the floor, and a glowing purple spell around a fountain – as the trailer introduces Kaatri, the main character, using her powers to defeat the undead, vampires, and other creatures. The trailer is visually stunning, and the use of Tool’s music amplifies the dramatic effect.

Tool Isn’t a Total Stranger to Being Licensed in Video Games, But it’s Been a Really Long Time
- Three Tool songs were featured in 2008’s Guitar Hero World Tour
- The songs were “Schism,” “Parabola,” and “Vicarious.”
It’s not surprising that the band Tool would allow their music to be featured in the rhythm game Guitar Hero. However, their partnership with Dungeons & Dragons was unexpected, given the band’s reputation for being selective about licensing their songs. Beyond Guitar Hero and Dungeons & Dragons, Tool has also permitted the use of their music in various films and TV shows, including Escape From L.A., Captain America: The First Avenger, Beavis and Butt-head, The Terminal List: Dark Wolf, and Alien: Earth. With the addition of the Dungeons & Dragons spin-off Warlock to that list, it will be interesting to see if Wizards of the Coast can license more of Tool’s music for future game trailers – whether for additional Warlock content or a new, unannounced game.
Tool is known for being careful about how their music is used, and for a long time, they avoided streaming services altogether. But in 2019, they changed their minds and made their songs available on platforms like Spotify and Apple Music.
It’s unusual for Tool, a band with a 35-year history, to license their music for commercial use. While fans might enjoy hearing their songs in more Dungeons & Dragons trailers – the recent Warlock trailer was a great fit, and the music definitely enhanced the visuals – it seems likely they’ll continue to be selective about how their music is used. Don’t expect to hear a Tool song in another game trailer anytime soon.
