The new platformer game, Eternal Life of Goldman, has a demo available now for players on Xbox and PC. The game was first announced in August 2024, but a full release date hasn’t been announced yet.
Eternal Life of Goldman is part of a growing trend of beautifully hand-drawn games, especially common in side-scrolling platformers. Hollow Knight is a prime example, with its handcrafted art style creating a consistently haunting atmosphere in both the original game and its sequel, Silksong. Cuphead demonstrates how versatile this style can be, using a cheerful, retro animation look to immediately attract players. Even Disney Illusion Island, featuring Mickey Mouse and friends in a large Metroidvania world, employs a similar art style to Disney’s recent animated series.
The Demo for Eternal Life of Goldman is Now Available
The visually striking platformer Eternal Life of Goldman is now available to try with a new demo on Steam, the Xbox Store, and the Windows Store. Developed by Weappy Studio, the game was featured in a recent Xbox Partner Preview showcase and will be available on Xbox Game Pass from day one. A previous demo was released during Steam’s Next Fest, but this marks the first chance for players on consoles to experience the hand-drawn gameplay. Eternal Life of Goldman is also planned for release on PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch.

In Eternal Life of Goldman, you play as Goldman, an elderly adventurer exploring a beautiful chain of islands called the Archipelago. He uses a special cane that can be improved with new parts and abilities to overcome tricky platforming challenges. As he journeys to defeat a mysterious enemy called The Deity, players will face off against a variety of strange and dangerous creatures that stand in his way.
Eternal Life of Goldman is a new and unusual game available immediately with Xbox Game Pass, and it’s shaping up to be one of the most charming and memorable titles on the service. Its visuals are created using traditional, frame-by-frame animation, giving it a distinct look even among other hand-drawn games. The combat, which revolves around the main character’s cane, is reminiscent of the classic DuckTales games, particularly how Scrooge McDuck fights. While other games have featured elderly characters using canes as weapons, Eternal Life of Goldman is likely the darkest and most atmospheric, boasting a beautifully unsettling world and truly original enemy designs. The game’s mysterious story will undoubtedly captivate players and encourage them to unravel its secrets.
Although games with elderly main characters have been successful before, it’s still unusual to see them. Having an older protagonist like Goldman gives this game a different feel, making players feel like an underdog rather than a typical powerful hero. This contrast between the unassuming Goldman and the amazing worlds he explores is something players will likely find appealing as the full release of Eternal Life of Goldman approaches.
