POKÉMON X KOGEI – Exhibition Details
Playful Encounters of Pokémon and Japanese Craft
POKÉMON X Art Exhibition has been thoughtfully put together by the National Museum of Traditional Crafts. Notably, “kogei” refers to traditional Japanese craftsmanship in this context. This exceptional event showcases artworks from 20 distinct Japanese artists, encompassing sculptures, paintings, pottery, kimonos, and other pieces. All the creations are undeniably influenced by the universe and characters of the Pokémon series. The official website for this exhibition characterizes it as a unique blend of traditional Japanese craftsmanship and the vibrant world of Pokémon.
Imagine setting Pokemon and traditional Japanese craftwork, Kogei, side by side, and what kind of interplay between these two distinct worlds might emerge? A group of talented artists, ranging from a Living National Treasure to the younger generation, have delved into this intriguing question. Their creations capture the essence of Pokemon forms, movements, and even textures. These works also tap into nostalgic memories of video games, such as evolution, trading, journey destinations, and super-effective moves. Moreover, they extend invitations for Pokemon to seamlessly integrate into our daily lives, gracing everyday items like kimonos, obi clasps, and even trendy clothing.
70 fresh pieces of art await you in the exhibition hall! What emotions will these yet-to-be-experienced masterpieces evoke? Excitement, awe, laughter, shivers? The magic of creation multiplies once more! Delight in the incredible advancements in aesthetics and skill they have inspired.
At the POKÉMON X KOGEI exhibit, each artwork is exclusive and hasn’t been showcased in any prior Pokémon art galleries. For longtime Pokémon enthusiasts who may think they’ve seen it all, this exhibition offers an enticing freshness due to the original and distinct designs that breathe life into Pokémon in a previously unseen manner.
The Azabudai Hills Gallery in Tokyo is not the first place to exhibit “POKÉMON” X KOGEI; instead, this exhibition has already toured various locations across Japan and even abroad in 2023 and 2024. Specifically, it stopped at Ichikawa Prefecture, Shiga Prefecture, Shizuoka Prefecture, and made its way to the USA, where it was displayed at JAPAN HOUSE Los Angeles from July 2023 to January 2024. At present, the official website does not provide any information about whether Tokyo is the final destination for this exhibition or if it might continue to other cities (or even countries) beyond February. So, if you’re unable to visit Tokyo before then, there’s a possibility that the exhibition may travel further.
