Indiana Jones and the Great Circle Hands-On Preview: MachineGames Crafts a New Adventure

As a seasoned adventurer and a self-proclaimed Indiana Jones wannabe, let me tell you that what I’ve seen of “Indiana Jones and the Great Circle” has left me utterly captivated! The blend of stealth, combat, tomb raiding, and puzzle-solving is nothing short of exhilarating. It feels as if MachineGames has managed to weave a tapestry of adventure that rivals even the silver screen exploits of our beloved hero.

MachineGames is venturing into unexplored realms with the upcoming title, “Indiana Jones and the Great Circle“. While the primary team has worked outside the popular Wolfenstein series, this project represents a distinct departure. A game emphasizing puzzles and exploration seems fitting for the Indiana Jones brand, and it’s an innovative direction for MachineGames as well.

After spending several hours on Indiana Jones and the Great Circle and watching its trailers, I’m still amazed by how different this game is for the development team. Even fans of games like The Darkness or The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay, developed by Starbreeze (a studio made up of many essential members from MachineGames), will notice that Indiana Jones and the Great Circle has less focus on combat and instead emphasizes stealth. Additionally, this game leverages the Indiana Jones IP to allow players to solve puzzles and decipher clues to acquire valuable artifacts.

The Look and Feel are Classic Indiana Jones

From the outset, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle has a familiar Spielberg feel. The story begins with Indiana Jones and a Marshall College colleague enjoying a night out, which is interrupted by a break-in that piques the archaeology professor’s interest, launching another thrilling journey around the world. Harrison Ford’s likeness and Troy Baker’s convincing portrayal ensure that the character of Indiana Jones meets fan expectations. Baker skillfully captures the classic witty smile and gravelly voice that made Ford famous – it’s as if the original Indiana Jones has been brought to life in this game, without actually hiring Ford himself.

Although the initial glimpse didn’t fully convey the core mystery or adventure of “Indiana Jones and the Great Circle”, it doesn’t appear that this story takes place on a canonical island from the series. Without disclosing spoilers, the game’s opening prologue hinted at references to familiar film characters, suggesting that the setting falls between “Raiders” and “The Last Crusade”. Instead of merely capturing a moment in Indiana Jones’ life without interfering with established relationships, it seems that “The Great Circle” could add depth to characters beloved by fans, particularly our iconic protagonist, Indiana Jones, donning his signature fedora and cracking his whip.

Discussing the whip, the video game adaptation of Indiana Jones’ fighting style in “Indiana Jones and the Great Circle” is spot-on. Blasting through with guns isn’t smart in this game, as players often find themselves dodging or covertly dispatching enemies blocking Indy’s path instead. Improvised items like a bottle, broom, shovel, or hammer serve as the most effective weapons. These can be used to hurl in a direction and divert adversaries from Indy’s chosen route, or to creep up behind and neutralize them in rather violent manners.

In the game “Indiana Jones and the Great Circle“, stealth can be an enjoyable method for defeating opponents. However, should this tactic fail, Indiana Jones is always equipped with his trusty whip and fists as backup options.

In the game “The Great Circle“, Indiana Jones fights using his fists as his initial choice, similar to Indiana Jones slipping into trouble and employing his whip and fists to extricate himself. However, if he’s discovered or encounters difficulties, he can parry enemy blows with precise timing of a block, allowing for increased damage. It has the feel of first-person fighting, but a missed block can significantly reduce Indiana Jones’ health. The items he collects to divert enemies can balance the melee combat, but each item only lasts for a limited number of hits.

In Indiana Jones’ game, his whip offers an additional tactical element during fights. Players can use it to disarm opponents or disrupt their defense positions. MachineGames creatively incorporated stealth maneuvers with the whip too, such as wrapping it around enemies’ legs and causing them to stumble and fall. Although the whip is primarily used for movement, its inclusion as a tool strengthens the game’s Indiana Jones identity.

This is an Indiana Jones Adventure Through and Through

In this game, the atmosphere strongly resembles an Indiana Jones adventure due to its enigmatic nature and exploration elements. While the teaser showcased a significant amount of stealth and combat, it also offered ample chances for tomb raiding and hunting down concealed treasures. The puzzles aren’t excessively difficult, but they aren’t straightforward either. They demand the application of pertinent information from the game environment or a manuscript to solve, and are thoughtfully created. For those who might struggle, MachineGames has equipped Indiana Jones with a camera that will provide a hint when pointed at a puzzle.

Structurally, the game Indiana Jones and the Great Circle combines linear stages with semi-open world settings. After the initial scene at Marshall College, the action swiftly transitions to The Vatican, where Indy secretly connects with a contact. In this part of the game, the progression is generally straightforward, although there are multiple routes to travel from one point to another. If players opt for a direct path, they may face the risk of being discovered and engaging in combat. On the other hand, staying in the shadows and navigating rooftops provides a more gradual and secure route.

Following The Vatican, the scene transitioned to Giza, an expansive region brimming with liberty. There was an abundance of attractions, side missions, characters to interact with, and hidden treasures to discover, making Indy’s map indispensable for navigation. Although there was a primary path, even the main mission utilized the broader area and necessitated completing multiple sub-tasks in various locations. MachineGames could have opted for a strictly linear experience for Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, but incorporating these open areas seemed to expand the adventure and add depth that would typically be left to interpretation in a movie.

In Indiana Jones, though the emphasis lies on sneaking and close-quarter fights, you’ll find that there are guns available in the game. Indy carries a pistol, while defeated enemies drop their weapons. However, it seems MachineGames is trying to minimize gunplay as much as they can in this type of game. Taking down an entire enemy camp or base isn’t usually the key to success, and while Indy can restore his health by consuming food, his health depletes rapidly if you’re not cautious. Yet, those red barrels always catch the eye.

Notable features also include secret adventure books scattered throughout levels that enhance/alter Indy’s capabilities. These upgrades include regaining stamina upon defeating an adversary, a valuable asset in combat situations. Gathering collectibles, artifacts, and perusing manuscripts will reward players with money, which can be used to access the upgrades linked to these Adventure Books. Despite being a first-person game, there are instances during movement, such as scaling a building or using the whip to swing, where the game shifts to third person. MachineGames focused on making these transitions smooth as they believed it was important to remind players that they’re embodying Indiana Jones.

MachineGames could have simply combined Indiana Jones with Wolfenstein for potential success, but what sets this game apart is its commitment to delivering an authentic adventure tailored to the iconic Indiana Jones character. The game effectively translates Troy Baker’s performance into a likeness of Harrison Ford, while also demonstrating a deep respect for the property that is evident in every aspect. It seems that satisfying fans and staying true to the franchise was a top priority during development.

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle isn’t simply categorized as one type of game; it encompasses stealth, action combat, puzzle-solving, and exploration. The experience I had was an immersive blend of these elements, creating a captivating representation of Indiana Jones within an interactive format. Whether this initial taste will hold up in the long run remains to be seen, but if the early impressions are any guide, then Indiana Jones and the Great Circle promises to be an exhilarating journey.
