Injustice 3 Hype?! Reveal Date LEAKED!

For more than fifteen years, NetherRealm Studios, initially comprised of former Midway Games team members after their bankruptcy and acquisition by Warner Bros, has consistently introduced Mortal Kombat games into the contemporary fighting game genre. Through the seventh, eighth, and ninth console generations, they have maintained the unique combat styles and narratives that characterize Mortal Kombat.

NetherRealm Studio took the distinctive 2D fighting style of Mortal Kombat and incorporated it into the DC universe through the multimedia project titled Injustice. Since the launch of Injustice 2 more than eight years ago, enthusiasts of the totalitarian Superman universe might be able to make an educated guess about when Injustice 3 could potentially be announced by considering past game reveals in the series and a recent hint from WB themselves.

A History of Injustice Game Announcements and Releases

After the launch of 2008’s “Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe” and 2011’s “Mortal Kombat”, NetherRealm Studios’ creative director Ed Boon aimed to develop a 2D fighting game that would be entirely based in the DC universe, capturing the thrilling atmosphere of superhero and villain adventures. Inspired by this idea and the appeal of watching legendary DC heroes and villains engage in combat on screen, NetherRealm Studios created the “Injustice” universe to offer a storyline that would place Batman and Superman at odds, diverging from the main DC narrative.

Previously, the game, known for its injustices, was built using Unreal Engine 3 and had some limitations due to a necessary T-rating. However, these constraints led to NetherRealm Studios and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment unveiling Injustice: Gods Among Us towards the end of May in 2012.

After the launch of Injustice 1 in April 2013, followed by the release of its Ultimate Edition with all DLC later that year, the development of its sequel didn’t pick up momentum until after the release of Mortal Kombat X in 2015. By analyzing player feedback and data from both Injustice 1 and Mortal Kombat X, NetherRealm aimed to create Injustice 2 with a highly balanced and innovative fighting system, showcasing the new customizable Gear System for the first time.

This eventually led to the official announcement of Injustice 2 in early June 2016, with the game being launched on eighth-generation consoles approximately a year later, in May 2017. Much like its predecessor, Injustice 1, NetherRealm subsequently released a Legendary Edition of Injustice 2 in March 2018, which included all DLC.

Injustice’s Mobile, Arcade, and Comic Book Releases

After diving into the epic battles of Injustice 1 and 2 on consoles and PCs, I was thrilled to find out that these games were also made available on mobile devices. The first game’s mobile app dropped in April 2013, while its sequel joined the fray in May 2017. Interestingly, the mobile version of Injustice 1 even found a new life as an arcade cabinet release in October 2017. And to keep the story going, between each game release, DC Comics published comic book series that filled in the backstory for both games’ campaigns.

The original Injustice comic series was initially revealed in 2012 and launched for publication in 2013, running until 2016. A subsequent series titled Injustice: Ground Zero, which further developed and expanded upon the storyline of the first Injustice, followed from 2016 to 2017. The comic series for Injustice 2 was announced in 2016 and began publication in 2017, carrying on through 2018.

When Fans Could Expect An Injustice 3 Announcement

After wrapping up with “Injustice 2”, NetherRealm Studios surprised us Mortal Kombat enthusiasts by releasing a sequel to “Mortal Kombat X” in 2019, titled “Mortal Kombat 11”. It seemed like NetherRealm was following a pattern of alternating between “Mortal Kombat” and “Injustice” games. This pattern led many of us to speculate that their next big project would be “Injustice 3”. However, in May 2023, we were taken aback when NetherRealm revealed their upcoming game wouldn’t be an “Injustice” title but rather a new installment in the “Mortal Kombat” series, officially named “Mortal Kombat 1”.

Since 2018, there’s been very limited interaction with the game Injustice, except for rare hints or mentions of a potential Injustice 3 by Boon on various platforms like X (previously Twitter). The majority of Injustice-related content has actually emerged from DC themselves, such as the 2021 Injustice animated movie they produced.

Absolutely, any guesses regarding an imaginary “Injustice 3” or its potential release date should be viewed with skepticism until any formal announcement is made.

Although Mortal Kombat 1 and its expansion pack, Khaos Reigns, have generally received positive feedback and sold fairly well throughout their almost two-year run, there is still a significant number of NetherRealm and DC fans eagerly waiting for Injustice 3 to be officially announced. As of now, it’s unclear if NetherRealm has started preliminary work on their next big project, but recent hints indicate that we might hear about a new NetherRealm game soon.

On May 14th, NetherRealm made available the immediate release of the Mortal Kombat 1: Definitive Edition. This digital version includes all downloadable content, such as character-inspired skins from the upcoming Mortal Kombat 2 movie. Shortly after this announcement, Warner Bros.’ official social media platforms hinted at future plans for the Injustice 2 series as well.

A Potential Reveal and Release Window for Injustice 3

After the unveiling of the Definitive Edition, many speculate that it may mark the conclusion of Mortal Kombat 1’s additional content and hint at NetherRealm Studios’ upcoming major project. This could be either the next Injustice game or Mortal Kombat 2. If this assumption holds true, fans might be looking forward to an announcement for Injustice 3 or Mortal Kombat 2 as early as spring 2026, or as late as 2028. Once announced, these games could potentially launch as early as 2027 or as late as fall 2028 or even 2029. This is based on the pattern of previous Injustice and Mortal Kombat announcements, where the game is typically released a year after its announcement, while Mortal Kombat 1 was launched a few months following its announcement.

NetherRealm Studios has put out six primary Mortal Kombat titles and two Injustice games: for instance, the 2011 Mortal Kombat, Injustice: Gods Among Us, Mortal Kombat X, Injustice 2, Mortal Kombat 11, and a newer one titled Mortal Kombat 1.
