As a dedicated fan of the fighting genre, I’ve been thoroughly entertained by the two action-packed installments that the Injustice franchise has delivered. Known for their work on the legendary Mortal Kombat series, NetherRealm Studios has proven themselves as masters of this genre. What sets Injustice apart is its unique comic book twist, offering an engaging take on a formula I love.
The story of “Injustice” presents a grim narrative where Superman establishes an oppressive regime following the Joker’s deception in causing him to unintentionally kill Lois Lane and devastate Metropolis. This tragic event pushes Superman into a more sinister character than typically depicted, offering an intriguing twist. Now that talks of “Injustice 3” have resurfaced, it remains uncertain what the next chapter might bring. Although the game hasn’t been officially announced yet, it’s clear that “Injustice 3” can’t simply retread old ground. Instead, let’s hope that the upcoming game will mirror the progression of the DC Universe, growing and evolving along with it.
Injustice 3 Needs to Be Far More Than a Run-of-the-Mill Threequel
NetherRealm Studios Has Met With James Gunn and Peter Safran
- Back in 2022, Warner Bros. hired James Gunn and Peter Safran to reboot the DC cinematic universe.
- This new era of DC is now underway, with its first project being last year’s animated series Creature Commandos.
- Superman is set to be the first major release of this era.
Since Gunn and Safran assumed control over DCU, long-time fans of the brand have been eagerly anticipating what this new phase might entail. The recently released ‘Creature Commandos’ received generally positive feedback, but the true litmus test lies in the upcoming ‘Superman’ reboot. What really piques curiosity, however, is that Gunn and Safran have disclosed they’ve been conversing with NetherRealm and Rocksteady, both owned by Warner Bros.
In February, Safran mentioned that he often discusses character ideas and stories with the heads of studios like NetherRealm and Rocksteady who are under JB. This conversation has piqued the interest of fans of both the Injustice and Arkham series. Although this doesn’t guarantee a new game for each franchise, it certainly stirs up anticipation among fans.
On July 11, 2025, the movie featuring Superman will be released. David Corenswet has been cast as the main character, while Rachel Brosnahan takes on the role of Lois Lane and Nicolas Hoult will portray Lex Luthor.
NetherRealm Should Embrace DC’s Changes
It might prove advantageous for NetherRealm Studios to link itself, in some capacity, with the DC Universe. While maintaining its signature darker, alternate timeline approach for the next _Injustice_ game, incorporating characters such as Booster Gold and Green Lantern (Guy Gardner) could breathe new life into the series. This move could potentially attract a larger audience, both longtime fans and modern followers, with these fresh additions.
It’s been buzzing around that NetherRealm Studios might have scrapped the third DLC pack for Mortal Kombat 1. However, this isn’t verified information as of now. But if it turns out to be correct, such a move could indicate a significant shift in direction for the studio.
Injustice 3 Still Waits in the Shadows
At the moment, it’s uncertain if NetherRealm plans to create a third installment of the Injustice series. While such a game might still be wishful thinking, there’s still a chance it could happen. Meeting fan expectations can be challenging, but considering the evolutions within the new DC Universe might provide NetherRealm with insights into which risks are successful and which aren’t.
In this fresh phase of the DC series, there’s a strong possibility that it could gain the momentum it requires. Naturally, only the flow of time can confirm this, but when Superman hits the big screen, it will be thrilling to discover if NetherRealm has any plans related to DC characters to share.
