Initially, when the game “Injustice: Gods Among Us” debuted approximately a decade ago, the notion of a villainous Superman was still quite novel. The powerful leader of the Justice League, who lost his ethical bearings and transformed into a ruthless dictator, was intriguing for many gamers, offering a fresh take on storytelling. However, over time, this concept has been explored extensively. Characters like Homelander, Omni-man, the Viltrumites, Brandon Breyer from “Brightburn”, and even the Regime Superman have had ample opportunities to dominate the spotlight, making the “evil Superman” narrative feel repetitive. It’s evident that “Injustice 3” requires a new primary antagonist.

If “Injustice 3” doesn’t feature Regime Superman as the main villain, it leaves us wondering who could step into that role instead. The DC universe boasts a variety of planet-sized threats, yet many of the most powerful have already been confronted, such as Brainiac, Doomsday, and even Superman himself. However, there are still many formidable adversaries left unexplored.

Injustice 3 Main Villain Wishlist

Darkseid

Darkseid, the powerful villain native to DC Comics, was one of the strongest downloadable characters in the game Injustice 2, yet he didn’t show up in the game’s main storyline. Though he has been seen in comics linked to Injustice, these appearances are not considered canonical. Interestingly, Scarecrow, who was believed to have perished in Joker’s Metropolis bombing plot, appeared as a playable character in Injustice 2, which might suggest some flexibility in the game’s continuity.

Darkseid requires no introduction or clarification regarding his villainous capabilities. He embodies sinister evil in a captivating comic book fashion, making him an ideal adversary to unite Earth’s heroes (and even those who were once heroes). If the creators at NetherRealm decide so, Darkseid’s oppressive reign might trigger Regime Superman’s journey towards redemption, as he recognizes the striking resemblance between his ideals and those of the Lord of Apokolips. However, there is a possibility that Superman may have progressed too far along his path to be salvaged.

Trigon

In the realm of comic book families, where questionable fatherhood is commonplace, Trigon could arguably take the cake for being the most abysmal. Most notably recognized as Raven’s dad, Trigon serves as the embodiment of evil in the DC universe, a role equivalent to the devil in other narratives. With immense power that borders on omnipotence and an inherently malevolent nature, Trigon is an extraterrestrial entity whose presence in the main reality often threatens to bring about catastrophic events, such as the end of times. Despite some critics arguing for a grander introduction, Trigon has subtly hinted at his villainous prowess as early as the initial installment of Injustice.

In the alternate storyline of “Injustice”, the Teen Titans meet a tragic end during the Metropolis blast. This event drives Cyborg and Raven towards their darker selves, aligning with Superman’s regime. For Raven specifically, this transformation involves renouncing her humanity, succumbing to Trigon’s control, and manifesting demonic red skin. Her powers also take on a more sinister hue. Although Trigon himself hasn’t appeared in the games yet, Raven remains an integral character within the “Injustice” universe, hinting that her father may not be too distant.

Nekron

In the “Blackest Night” comic book series from DC, it’s Nekron who orchestrates the return of every deceased character as malevolent Black Lanterns. As portrayed by author Geoff Johns, Nekron is a formidable force of evil in the DC universe, and the extent of his powers are uncertain and could very well be limitless.

It’s undeniable that the plot of Injustice has grown increasingly grim, as it’s lost many characters, both on-screen and off. Characters like Luthor, Shazam, The Teen Titans, Joker, and Lois Lane are just a few examples. If Nekron were to bring about a Blackest Night adaptation, it could resurrect these deceased characters, creating an intriguing narrative and providing players with fighters they’d normally be unable to control due to the storyline restrictions.

General Zod

In the original Injustice, Zod debuted as a DLC fighter, but since then, not much has been explored about him or his faction of Kryptonian supremacists, which seems like a missed chance for more development. Some argue that Regime Superman is similar to Zod’s character, yet there remains intriguing narrative possibilities within this storyline.

Among the formidable villains in DC Comics lore, Zod stands out as one of the most menacing. While the reasons behind his actions may fluctuate depending on the storyline or reboot, two constants remain: Zod’s ambitions always involve Earth, and he harbors an intense rivalry with Superman. If ever Zod found himself on a planet ruled by his arch-nemesis, his jealousy and fury would boil over. Furthermore, Zod’s performance in the original Injustice game was underestimated, making his potential return to the roster highly anticipated.
