As a seasoned gamer and cat enthusiast, I can’t help but feel purr-y delighted about the upcoming release of Cat Quest 3. The blend of piracy with the charming world of Felingard is a perfect storm of adventure that has me meowing for more.

Setting sail on the open waters in pursuit of treasure is a timeless gaming staple, from games like Sid Meyer’s Pirates to Skull and Bones, the golden era of piracy offers a wealth of inspiration for game developers, with even Assassin’s Creed joining in the fun. The newest title to join this seafaring adventure is Cat Quest 3, and just before its release on International Cat Day, Desmond Wong, CEO of developer The Gentlebros, sat down with Game Rant to discuss the allure of the Purribean Sea and the new direction for their popular feline franchise.

Pirates Aren’t That Different from Fantasy Warriors

In essence, the shift towards pirate-themed adventures in “Cat Quest 3” is more about refinement than a complete overhaul. As you play through this new release, series enthusiasts will recognize many familiar elements. Instead of reinventing the wheel, the seas of Purribean represent an advancement of what has become comfortably familiar from the original “Cat Quest” formula, according to Wong’s explanation.

“It’s intriguing to note that the fantasy of a pirate and a medieval warrior share many similarities! They both seek treasure and plunder, embark on thrilling adventures, and engage in daring feats (with the added twist that pirates fight their battles on the open seas). This discovery led us to believe that the pirate motif would be perfect for Cat Quest. All we needed was to refine the gameplay with the incorporation of a pirate ship!”

As I set sail this time, my feline crew and I are bound for the west from Felingard. Whispers hint at a fallen star, ripe for discovery, and treasure beyond measure if I choose to don the mantle of privateer. The seas of the golden age of piracy teem with challenges that must be confronted head-on. This voyage promises fresh surprises and detours, making it an ideal starting point for newcomers to the swashbuckling life while keeping veteran adventurers on their toes.

As a gaming enthusiast, Cat Quest 3 seemed to fit perfectly within the era of piracy. However, the real spark that ignited this game came from a clever pun, which served as the foundation for Gentlebros. Once we built upon that joke, new dimensions of gameplay unfolded before us. It was an exhilarating adventure, one that we embarked on together with the players.

“Following the introduction of dogs in Cat Quest 2, it became clear that rats would be the next addition. Given the series’ penchant for puns, ‘pi-rats’ (pirates) seemed like a flawless fit. This is why we were certain that the third game had to have a pirate theme.”

A pirate game without a ship feels more like a pretend pirate game than the real deal. Ships in these games serve multiple purposes – they’re homes, weapons, companions, and are cherished for their iconic significance by players. In many games such as Palworld, you can even build your own ship! In Sea of Thieves, your ship is a major means of self-expression, and the number of mods adding pirate ships to Skyrim is simply immense. It’s not just a gameplay element, but almost a character in its own right.

Indeed, Cat Quest 3 required a nautical vessel. However, Gentlebros didn’t opt for the standard colossal frigate or even a barque that are often associated with slow movement, wide turns, broadsides for cannon battles, and being enshrouded in smoke and water. Even smaller ships like clippers or sloops have to deal with the physics of sailing on the sea.

Wong was seeking a touch of agility and feline-like qualities, as this style aligns nicely with the warm, vibrant, and somewhat animated aesthetic typically found in the Cat Quest game series.

“A brand new feature in our game is a pirate ship that players have free reign over in the region of Purribean. They can board it whenever they wish, explore its deck, and engage in battles against other pirate ships while sailing the vast oceans!”

In addition to its swift and engaging sailing mechanics, Cat Quest 3 also brings innovation to its gameplay formula. Though the game’s classic dungeons, mirroring its overworld design, can still be found in Cat Quest 3, a fresh type of dungeon has been introduced. These side-scrolling dungeons, though only two-dimensional, introduce an entirely new layer to the dungeon exploration experience.

Although it’s not in the game currently, Wong eagerly anticipates the comeback of a beloved aspect from past games, known as “Mew Game.” This feature will allow players to adjust the game’s challenge using “meowdifiers.” Additionally, he hopes to collaborate with RGB keyboard manufacturers once more to resurrect the engaging interaction between the game and popular peripherals, similar to Cat Quest 2.
