Inside Out 2 Director Reveals Cut Content From The Movie

Summary

  • Inside Out 2 was a massive success, becoming the highest-grossing movie of 2024.
  • The movie introduces new emotions for a teenage Riley, with Anxiety, Envy, and more.
  • The director revealed cut content that could potentially be included in future Inside Out projects.

As a cinephile who’s been following Pixar since their early days, I must say that Inside Out 2 was nothing short of a delightful journey through the complexities of human emotions. The movie’s success at the box office and critical acclaim only solidifies its place as one of Pixar’s finest creations.

The follow-up film to Inside Out, released earlier this year, left a significant impact and has continued to hold the title as the top-grossing movie of 2024. The Pixar sequel expanded upon its initial themes regarding human emotions, though not all innovative concepts were included in the final production.

In the sequel to “Inside Out,” I found myself revisiting Riley during her high school years, where she’s grappling with a whole new set of emotions. As Joy, Sadness, Anger, Disgust, and Fear struggle to adapt, fresh emotions like Anxiety, Envy, Ennui, and Embarrassment take center stage. The second installment of “Inside Out” was met with immense praise, garnering a 91% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but it truly shone in the box office, grossing an astounding $1.68 billion worldwide.

Inside Out 2 Director Reveals Cut Emotions

The sequel to “Inside Out”, titled “Inside Out 2”, has recently gained some recognition at the Golden Globe Awards. Director Kelsey Mann shared with Variety some scrapped ideas from the film, one of which was a location called Procrastination Land. This area would have featured jokes about the emotions questioning why construction was always delayed. However, it proved challenging to incorporate this concept into the storyline, especially since the movie focuses on Riley being overcome by Anxiety. As a result, it was removed from the film, but Mann expressed interest in revisiting this idea at some point in the future.

As a passionate movie enthusiast, I’m sharing an interesting tidbit – Steven Spielberg once hinted at the inclusion of novel emotions in his cinematic universe. Schadenfreude (delighting in another’s misfortune) was initially considered, but it didn’t quite fit into the narrative’s flow. Another emotion, Jealousy, raised some eyebrows due to its overlap with Envy. In a humorous twist, we even thought about portraying them as indistinguishable twins in the storyline!

In the development process for Inside Out 2, one emotion that stood out was Jealousy, which we explored quite early on. However, when I initially began working on it, I wasn’t able to distinguish between jealousy and envy. To illustrate this confusion, we created a humorous scene where these two emotions appeared as identical twins, making it difficult for others to tell them apart. After consulting with our experts, I learned the distinction – envy is wanting what others have, while jealousy is feeling discontented with one’s own situation compared to others. As Riley’s teenage years are a time when comparisons with peers are prevalent, we decided to focus more on Envy and ultimately removed Jealousy from the storyline.

Will Inside Out 3 Happen at Pixar?

Although most of these ideas didn’t end up in the movie, Mann has hinted several times that she intends to explore them further down the line. As of now, Inside Out 3 hasn’t been officially approved yet, but given the second film’s tremendous success, it seems like only a matter of time. Mann previously expressed optimism within Pixar about creating a third installment, with many creatives expressing interest in continuing Riley’s story as she grows older.

The Dream Productions miniseries available on Disney+ serves as extra content between the Inside Out films, focusing on the adventures of the dream-creating team for Riley each night. This spin-off series sees the return of significant characters from Inside Out, including Joy and Riley along with her parents. By doing so, Dream Productions demonstrates that the franchise can continue in various formats, potentially making the anticipation for another Inside Out film a little more bearable.

Inside Out 2 is currently streaming on Disney+.
